The 1960s were the ideal time for sushi to make an appearance on the dining scene. World War II ended nearly a generation before, and young gourmands were ready to be introduced to a totally unique cuisine. While the appeal of raw fish and cold rice might have been lost on their parents, cosmopolitan twenty-somethings sought out new foods. That was especially true in swinging Southern California, where the nation’s first sushi restaurant opened in 1966.

Named Kawafuku, the restaurant was located in the Little Tokyo section of Los Angeles. It wasn’t just a sushi joint, though. The bottom floor was a Japanese restaurant, serving more accessible dishes like teriyaki and tempura dinners. But the top floor was a sushi bar, with a sushi master named Shigeo Saito brought from Japan to help introduce diners to the intricate delicacies of traditional sushi. Saito’s wife was the only waitress at the bar, and together they presided over a bustling hotspot in the Los Angeles dining scene.(history.com)

You must think I’m silly if I could pass on Armadillo Willy’s!

Louis Ballast, born in 1910, operated the Humpty Dumpty Barrel Drive-In in Denver and was constantly looking for original ways to improve the simple meal. One day he put a slice of cheese on the burger, heated the cheese, and decided that the taste of the cheese went well with the beef.

Being excited that much he applied for a patent on his invention ‘Cheeseburger’ in March 1935. Anyhow, the word Cheeseburger became a quite usual and generic expression nowadays.

Those who want to pilgrimage to the cultural place of the Cheeseburger can do so by visiting 2776 N. Speer Blvd, Denver, Colorado, which is the historical site of the Humpty Dumpty which burned down completely. Today on this location you will find a quite boring parking lot here. A small memorial reminds of the Humpty Dumpty.

But: some other places in California and Kentucky doubt that this is the place where the the Cheeseburger was invented. however they never applied for the patant, and so Mr. Louis E. Ballast has to be considered the real Cheeseburger inventor. He died in 1975.

In 1900, Mr. Louis Lassen has allegedly invented the basic burger (beef in a bun) in his diner Louis’ Luch, 261-263 Crown Street, New Haven. Until today, you can eat there, since his family is still operating the diner, which has been established in 1895.(magazineusa.com)

Here in America, we love burgers!!!

I mean absolutely love burgers!!

If you ask an American how often do they eat hamburgers a month, then they may say at least once to twice a week.

If it weren’t for health reasons and gaining weight then I would eat them everyday.

There are all kinds of burgers you can make…

Hamburgers…

Cheeseburgers….

Bacon Burgers…

Barbecue Burgers…

Regardless of what type of this nice greasy dripping mouth watering piece of ground up meat; it makes me quiver inside.  Armadillo Willy’s has one of these mesmerizing masterpieces that just gives me chills.

Aroma that will put you in a Coma over at Scoma’s!!

Live Action Quick Tips

Did you know….

Sausalito is like a stage where one production has followed another for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. Whatever the theme or plot, Sausalito, with its characteristic flair, has provided a setting to match the action.

For between three and five millennia, the backdrop it provided for a cluster of Native American (Coastal Miwok) villages remained fairly constant. Its tranquil surface varied little over time. But with the successive arrival in Northern California of the Spanish, Mexicans, and Euro-Americans, the stage was set for dramatic change.

Are you looking for a new twist on the traditional Western? Sausalito’s story as a Mexican land grant in the early 1800s arguably equals the best Broadway musical, replete with Vaqueros, dons, extravagant fiestas, and, ultimately, the downfall of its colorful leading man. Rancho del Sausalito even had a role in the Bear Flag Rebellion of 1846.

Later with the advent of ferry service to and from San Francisco, Sausalito became the setting for a burgeoning Victorian village–a place of summer houses and hillside estates, populated by wealthy San Franciscans and members of the local British colony. A fleet of British-owned, square-rigged grain ships filled the bay below. But Sausalito, by its very nature, invited diversity. (ci.sausalito.ca.us)

It is a county of cities with great views from the Bay water surroundings, great ocean views and islands you can visit by boat.

Sausalito is one of those cities and it is not only great for the beautiful ocean views but home for many romantic restaurants and elegant cuisine.

You’re gonna have an exotic flavor blast over at Dish Dash!

Live Action Quick Tips

Did you know….

Cuisine in the Middle East is diverse and changes depending on the country. Some dishes are specific to one region, and flavoring techniques may change from country to country. Similarities exist, however, and some dishes are popular throughout much of the Middle East. Olives and chickpeas are frequently used in cooking, and flatbreads such as pita are popular. Since most countries in the Middle East are primarily Islamic, certain dietary rules are observed. Alcohol is prohibited in many countries, as are pork products.

Chicken, beef and lamb are popular protein choices, and chunks of these meats are sometimes skewered with vegetables and cooked as kebabs. Yogurt and cheeses are specially made and used in cooking. Soups and side dishes made with lentils, beans, peppers or other vegetables are often served with a main course.

Typically, Middle Eastern food is flavorful and aromatic, and uses spices such as cumin, nutmeg, turmeric and caraway to achieve strong flavors that are unique to the cooking of the region.(traveltips.usatoday.com)

The Pizza Box will knock you off your socks!

Live Action Quick Tips

Did you know….

The first documented United States pizzeria was G. (for Gennaro) Lombardi’s on Spring Street in Manhattan, licensed to sell pizza in 1905. (Prior to that, the dish was homemade or purveyed by unlicensed vendors.) Lombardi’s, still in operation today though no longer at its 1905 location, “has the same oven as it did originally,” noted food critic John Mariani, author of “How Italian Food Conquered the World.”

Debates over the finest slice in town can be heated, as any pizza fan knows. But Mariani credited three East Coast pizzerias with continuing to churn out pies in the century-old tradition: Totonno’s (Coney Island, Brooklyn, opened 1924); Mario’s (Arthur Avenue, the Bronx, opened 1919); and Pepe’s (New Haven, opened 1925).(history.com)

I had no clue on how good the food is from Peru!

Live Action Quick Tips

Did you know….

The Peruvian cuisine is an important expression of its own culture just as its ceramics, textiles, music and literature. Thanks to Peru’s three regions and ocean there are an abundance variety of fresh ingredients that satisfied not only the most sophisticated chef.
Many Inca dishes have make it practically unchanged to the XXI century, and are cooked just like 500 years ago. The best examples are probably carapulca and pachamanca.
During the Spanish Viceroyalty, which spanned over 3 centuries, the Iberian introduced many culinary techniques and ingredients, such as olives, grapes, dairy products, beef, chicken, and rice. Although native and Spanish cultures -and cuisines- were at first unconnected, they began to gradually mix, until they successively fused in Creole culture. New Criollo cuisine took the better of the two worlds to create dishes like Aji de Gallina or papa a la Huancaina, where hot peppers, cheese and milk gently blend in delicious sauces.
Spanish though didn’t come alone. They brought with them African slaves, many of whom worked in the cuisines of the noble and the wealthy. Over the years African influence proved essential to Peruvian culture, particularly regarding music and cuisine. Their talent in creating delightful dishes from poor, discarded ingredients has produced two of Peru’s best: Anticuchos and Tacu Tacu.(peruadventurestours.com)
