Did you know….

The first Chinese immigrants to the U.S. came mostly from the city of Taishan in the southeast coastal province of Guangdong. It was an area of China ravaged by rebellion, with little economic opportunity and a humble food culture. The cuisine consisted primarily of basic stir-fries with rice and vegetables, plus whatever meat was available. Flavor profiles veered toward the sweeter end. This fare established the foundation of Chinese food in America. The effects of this immigration wave in the United States, from an economic standpoint, were seen immediately.

By 1865, the rice industry in California was worth over a million dollars a year, and at $6 a sack, it was listed in a California store’s inventory as one of the most expensive items along with tea, gin, and oil. The primary consumers were, of course, the Chinese. The second major immigration wave came during the 1960s, ushering in different regional cuisines that began to shape the classic American-Chinese dishes we know today. Chefs mostly hailed from Taiwan and Hong Kong, and they introduced recipes for kung pao chicken, moo shu pork, and orange chicken—based off of Sichuan, Beijing, and Hunan dishes, respectively.(firstwefeast.com)

Chinese food has always been a delight in my house.

Ever since we were kids back in the 80’s, my mom would bring us Chinese food home for dinner and those were some of our most cheerful nights.

Sweet and sour pork, egg rolls, chow mein, beef broccoli and orange chicken.

This was pretty much what my mom ordered every time she brought the food home and then we would all sit around the TV and watch our 8 o’clock shows dining on some good ol Chinese food.

Today, it’s time to bring some of these memories back on a journey to PF Chang’s!

They are right on target with the Lasagna at Pasta Market!

Meat Lasagna, Garlic Bread

Live Action Quick Tips

Did you know….

Lasagna is believed to be one of the earliest types of pasta. These thin and wide noodles are most frequently layered in a dish with other savoury ingredients and baked to create a dish called – you guessed it – lasagna.

Several sources suggest the word lasagna may have come from the old Greek word laganon, which was used to describe a type flat cake or bread. That cake was not pasta, but when Ancient Romans learned about it and staring eating it they cut it into strips that could be layered and called it lagani. That food eventually transformed into a type of pasta and a dish called lasagna. The plural form of the word lasagna is lasagne. (thriftyfoods.com)

Italian food is truly one of the oldest forms of soul food out there!

It brings families together for conversation and laughter and goes great with red wine!

We , American’s lose our mind over it.. Especially pizza!

We’ll eat pizza for breakfast…

We’ll eat pizza for lunch..

On the electric chair, for the last meal , if they are American they would want pizza..

Other than the food on the go like pizza, the next best item that I love outside of spaghetti is lasagna; and Pizza Market sure knows how to get down with the get down on this dish..

Happy Barbecue Labor Day!

barbecue pork chops, brown sugar bacon wrapped asparagus, pork riblets, macaroni salad, hotlinks, salad

Live Action Quick Tips

Did you know….

Through the years the nation gave increasing emphasis to Labor Day. The first governmental recognition came through municipal ordinances passed during 1885 and 1886. From these, a movement developed to secure state legislation. The first state bill was introduced into the New York legislature, but the first to become law was passed by Oregon on February 21, 1887. During the year four more states — Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York — created the Labor Day holiday by legislative enactment. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By 1894, 23 other states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers, and on June 28 of that year, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories.

Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor, was first in suggesting a day to honor those “who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold.”More than 100 years after the first Labor Day observance, there is still some doubt as to who first proposed the holiday for workers.

But Peter McGuire’s place in Labor Day history has not gone unchallenged. Many believe that Matthew Maguire, a machinist, not Peter McGuire, founded the holiday. Recent research seems to support the contention that Matthew Maguire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, N.J., proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York. What is clear is that the Central Labor Union adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed a committee to plan a demonstration and picnic. (dol.gov)

Did you know….

Bone marrow is a food that has been prized throughout history– from hunter-gatherer tribes to haute cuisine chefs. It’s not hard to understand why, once you’ve tasted it. It’s delicate, meaty and fatty. It’s also rich in fat-soluble vitamins, including vitamins K1 and K2, although this will depend on what the animal has eaten.

Roasted marrow bones make a simple appetizer. Beef bones are the best because of their size. Select wide bones that are cut about three inches long. They should be from the femur or the humerus, called the “shank bones”. These are sometimes available in the frozen meats section of a grocery store, otherwise a butcher can procure them. If you have access to a farmer’s market that sells meats, vendors will typically have bones cut for you if you request it.(wholehealthsource.blogspot.com)
