Food that is never bland over at Shan!

Live Action Quick Tips

Did you know….

Halal is often used in reference to foods and drinks, i.e. foods that are permissible for Muslims to eat or drink under Islamic Shariʻah (law). The criteria specifies both what foods are allowed, and how the food must be prepared. The foods addressed are mostly types of meat and animal tissue.

The most common example of non-halal (or haraam) food is pork (pig meat). While pork is the only meat that cannot be eaten by all Muslims at all (due to religious—as Quran forbids it —and hygienic concerns), foods other than pork can also be haraam. The criteria for non-pork items include their source, the cause of the animal’s death, and how it was processed. It also depends on the Muslim’s madhab.

The food must come from a supplier that uses halal practices. Specifically, the slaughter must be performed by a Muslim, who must precede the slaughter by invoking the name of Allah, most commonly by saying “Bismillah” (“In the name of God”) and then three times “Allahu akbar” (God is the greatest). Then, the animal must be slaughtered with a sharp knife by cutting the throat, windpipe and the blood vessels in the neck, causing the animal’s death without cutting the spinal cord. Lastly, the blood from the veins must be drained. (miahalalfood.com)

I’ll Swim Across the Riviera for a Delicious Lunch at Arterra!

Live Action Quick Tips

Did you know….

The World Health Organization said Monday that eating processed meat such as sausages and ham causes cancer, while unprocessed red meat may also be carcinogenic.

The WHO’s cancer research unit now classifies processed meat as “carcinogenic to humans” based on evidence from hundreds of studies, and linked it specifically to colon, or colorectal, cancer.

The report outlined that simply eating 50 grams of processed meat each day — the equivalent of two slices of ham — can increase the risk of such cancer by 18%. However, the authors say the risks are relatively small to begin with.

The organization defines processed meat as any type of meat that is salted, cured or smoked to enhance its flavor or preserve it. Processed meat generally contains pork or beef, but may also contain poultry.

The WHO now classifies processed meat in the same category as smoking and asbestos, based on its certainty of a link with cancer, but stressed that did not mean they were equally dangerous.

Unprocessed red meat such as steak and lamb shanks is classified as “probably carcinogenic.”(money.cnn.com)

Burger and the Crunchy French Toast! I didn’t try anything else on the breakfast, or lunch menu but my team said all of their meals were pretty good.

Before I get into this adventure I need to address the WHO for making this extremely harsh statement about red meat.

Now I think we all know that red meat is not the best option on the food menu when it relates to the body. Too much of it can raise cholesterol, give you high blood pressure and now confirmed from the WHO can  also cause cancer.

I learned awhile back that Sodium Nitrate which is found in just about every frozen or refrigerated item is one of the ingredients that causes cancer.

There are also other things that scientists say that cause cancer; that is if you get too much burnt layers on your toast, bagels or even barbecuing your meat can cause cancer.

Asbestos, mold in your house, drinking too much wine, beer or alcohol and many other things can cause cancer.

Moderation is key in everything, and the key to good health is making sure you have a diet that includes colorful cancer fighting veggies, (the more colorful the better), fiber to prevent diabetes to control your insulin flow and also proteins of course with exercise.

I am not the best in my eating plan but I try to follow this model above. I also make sure to eat things I want as well, like a burger, pizza, spaghetti, etc.

Life just ain’t worth living to me without it. So do your best to be healthy but enjoy life as well!

Ok.. Enough with that.

You’ll Dine like an African Lion with a Rib Eye at Poseidon!

Live Action Quick Tips

Did you know….

Rib Eye is also Sold As: Beauty Steak, Market Stek, Delmonico Steak, Spencer Steak, Scotch Filet, Entrecôte.

Where It’s Cut From: The front end of the Longissimus dorsi, from the Rib primal of the steer. The further towards the head of the steer you get, the more of the Spinalis muscle you’ll find in your steak—that’s the cap of meat that wraps around the fatter end of the steak.

What It Tastes Like: Highly marbled with a large swath of fat separating the Longissiumus from the Spinalis. Fat is where a lot of the distinctive flavor of beef comes from, making ribeye one of the richest, beefiest cut available. The central eye of meat tends to be smooth textured with a finer grain than a strip steak, while the Spinalis section will have a looser grain and more fat. Many people (myself included) consider the Spinalis to be the absolute tastiest quick-cooking cut on the cow.

The Best Way to Cook It: Pan-frying, grilling, broiling. Because its copious fat is prone to causing flare-ups, grilling can be a bit tricky. Have a lid ready, and stand by with the tongs in case you need to rapidly spring into action and retrieve them from the depths of a fireball. This is my favorite cut for pan-searing.(seriouseats.com)

One of the food palaces I was able to visit with my team was a beach front restaurant in Del Mar, Ca called Poseidon!

Get ready to Crack open your Jaws when dining at Ma’s!!

Live Action Quick Tips

Did you know….

Most Americans love Chinese food, whether dining in a restaurant or from a slew of those little, folded white takeout boxes with the wire handle. However, the Chinese food found in most casual Chinese restaurants in the U.S. is very far removed from the authentic cuisine eaten daily by most people living in China.

There are many differences between authentic Chinese cuisine and Westernized Chinese food. From ingredients to cooking methods to popular dishes, the differences are numerous. In general, Westernized Chinese food is considered to be more bland and fattening than authentic Chinese food.

While you can likely find authentic Chinese restaurants or authentic dishes in restaurants around the country, most U.S. Chinese restaurants offer Westernized Chinese food. While Westernized dishes are far removed from the authentic dishes they once were, some Western Chinese food dishes are actually a complete invention!(restaurants.com)

Chinese food is a great tasty exotic meal for those that are used to eating hamburgers and hot dogs all day.

Most American’s are used to eating the sweet and sour pork, egg rolls and Kung Pao chicken but there is a distinct difference from eating the Westernized version versus the Authentic version.

I have to say that I like both but sometimes I actually like the Westernized versions better. The way the food is made in the Westernized versions tend to have more flavors that us Americans are adapted to.

However, once you get your taste buds adapted to the Western version and you want to try food more fresh and modern, then the Authentic version is the way to go.

Ma’s is a great place to eat some Authentic Chinese food!

You’re Gonna Need Time to Recoup after eating Butter and Zeus!

Live Action Quick Tips

Did you know….

The history of the beginnings of Chicken and Waffles is a perplexing one.  No one is really sure of its origins.  One of the original theories claims that Thomas Jefferson brought a waffle machine to the US from France in the 1790’s, thus beginning a waffle craze (even though the Pilgrims brought it to the New World back in the early 1600’s, we guess Tommy really sparked the interest).

Soon after, being embraced by the African American community, Chicken and Waffles began appearing in cookbooks (although, curiously, it did not appear in the first cookbook written around 1880 by a Black former slave called What Mrs. Fisher Knows About Old Southern Cooking by Abby Fisher).  The Pennsylvania Dutch (the first Germans to have settled in the US) have been pairing chicken with waffles probably before Thomas Jefferson was a twinkle in his mother’s uterus.

Instead of frying their chicken pieces, the PA Dutch version uses shredded pieces of boiled or roasted chicken on top of waffles and top it with lots of creamy gravy instead of hot sauce and syrup.  You may think this either looks like sick on a waffle or, possibly, chicken pot pie over a waffle. The final and most common origin is that Chicken and Waffles began in the 1930’s during the Harlem Jazz hayday, specifically at a place no longer in existence called Wells Supper Club.

When the Jazz musicians walked into Wells after a long night of playing, they wanted a combo of dinner and breakfast (dickfast?  dinfast?) and the staff created the crispy, crunchy, salty, sweet combo we love today. (weareneverfull.com)

I’ll have a Conniption Fit over some Red Lobster Biscuits!

Live Action Quick Tips

Did you know….

When you think of Red Lobster, the seafood lover in you undoubtedly thinks of one thing: The Cheddar Bay Biscuits. These tiny pillows of heaven are what make a meal at the classic seafood chain an experience.

Oddly, the biscuits were a late addition to the menu. It was only two decades into the chain’s 46-year history that the biscuits made an appearance.

The hush puppies that were their predecessor weren’t rating so well, so executive chef and main man of culinary development, Kurt Hankins, began experimenting with Texas toast-esque French bread.

He eventually decided to shake up traditional biscuit recipes by subbing the sugar with garlic and adding in cheese. And, just like that, a classic was born.(codeblackreport.com)

Red Lobster has been a memorable restaurant for me ever since I was a kid.

We would always go there when we were celebrating something special like birthdays, graduations, etc.

Just hearing my Mom say “Hey boys, you guys wanna go to Red Lobster!” would make us go crazy!!

Me and my brothers would jump for joy and run to get our shoes on to enjoy those delicious, heavenly created, flaky, buttery, garlic consumed biscuits and some seafood delights!

So much of a tradition that my kids love going as well. They give the same reaction to Red Lobster as I did when I was a kid…
