WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States appealed to members of the U.S. Congress for more assistance on Monday as her country resists a “brutal war” from Russia, saying Russia had used a vacuum bomb on Monday in its invasion of Ukraine.

“They used the vacuum bomb today, which is actually prohibited by the Geneva convention,” Ambassador Oksana Markarova said after a meeting with lawmakers. “The devastation that Russia is trying to inflict on Ukraine is large.”

She said Ukraine was working actively with U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration and Congress to obtain more weapons and tougher sanctions.

“They should pay, they should pay a heavy price,” she told reporters after leaving the meeting.

EU countries will send “fighter jets” to Ukraine at Kyiv’s request to help it counter the Russian air and land assault, the bloc’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said Sunday.

“We’re going to provide even fighting jets. We’re not talking about just ammunition. We are providing more important arms to go to a war,” he told a press conference.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has told the EU “they need the kind of fighting jets that the Ukrainian army is able to operate… some member states have these kinds of planes,” Borrell said.

A barrage of explosions shook the capital of Ukraine, Kyiv, a few hours ago.

The Russian Army attacked with cruise missiles and Iskander-M ballistic missiles hitting Ukrainian Army military bases in northeastern Kyiv in the Brovary region. There are reports that many Ukrainians are injured.

In the Brovary region the Ukrainian Army has:

– The Headquarters of the Army Intelligence Services
– The Center for Electronic Spying
S-300 air defense network
– The 72nd Center for Information and Psychological Enterprises

US officials: “25 km from the center of Kiev the Russians”

Senior US officials have said that the Russian Army is encircling Kyiv in many directions. At this point, let us emphasize that the Russians have been claiming since yesterday that the city has already been surrounded.

The Americans are very worried about possible “siege tactics” that the Russians will apply in the city.

Russian Central Bank takes ruble off life support — RT Business News

The Central Bank of Russia has suspended currency interventions in support of the ruble, the head of the regulator, Elvira Nabiullina, announced on Monday. According to Nabiullina, the regulator is unable to carry them out because of Russia’s assets freeze by US and EU member states.

“Due to restrictions on the use of foreign exchange reserves in dollars and euros, we did not carry out any interventions today. The government has announced a decision to introduce the mandatory sale of 80% of export earnings. This measure will ensure an even supply of foreign currency on the domestic fx market to meet the needs of importers and citizens. At the same time we are taking a number of steps to limit export of capital by non-residents,” said Nabiullina.

The Russian Ministry of Defense has issued an urgent bulletin saying “All civilians should leave Kyiv.”

They can do so by taking the highway towards Vasilkov, a city located 20km southwest of the capital, it said in a statement on Monday, claiming that “this direction is open and safe.”

The ministry added that Russia “only attacks military objects” and insisted that the civilian population will not be at risk if they are using this route.

Looks as though the negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in Belarus are not going too well.

To date, the Russians have been very careful not to bomb civilian targets. They have taken great losses of men in order to conduct their operations in this manner. Apparently the cost has become too high, or the Ukrainians are too intransigent at negotiations, and the gloves are coming off.

For Russia to publicly announce All Civilians should leave Kiev” shows that heavy bombing of that city is actually coming.

Things are about to get very much worse. . .

It could bring nuclear weapons back on Belarusian soil for the first time since the country gave them up after the fall of the Soviet Union and raises the stakes at a time when Lukashenko has fallen behind Russian President Vladimir Putin’s military assault on Ukraine.

Putin on Sunday ordered Russian nuclear deterrent forces be put on high alert in a dramatic escalation of tensions with the West.

According to Censor.NET, this was announced by Deputy Head of the Presidential Office Andriy Sibiga.

“The President of Ukraine V. Zelenskyi has just signed a historic document – an application for Ukraine’s membership in the European Union. Together with the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada R. Stefanchuk and the Prime Minister of Ukraine D. Shmygal, a Joint Statement was signed,” he wrote.

“Documents are already on the way to Brussels! Congratulations, Ukraine, congratulations to all of us! The story is being made now!” – added Sibiga.
