Exercises on islands disputed by Japan, a few days after Tokyo’s decision to impose sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, Moscow announced.
The news is causing global concern as many fear the war could spread beyond Ukraine.
Which are the disputed islands
Four islands, which Russia calls the South Kurils and Japan the Northern Territories – are the subject of a dispute between the two countries that has lasted more than 70 years, according to the BBC.
Due to the conflict, Russia and Japan have not yet signed a peace treaty to end World War II (!).
Earlier this week, Russia said it was withdrawing from negotiations with Japan to sign the treaty amid Tokyo’s tough stance on Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
Now, Russia’s Eastern Military District has announced it will conduct military exercises on the islands with more than 3,000 troops and hundreds of military vehicles.
Japan had earlier condemned Russia for withdrawing from peace talks and suspending joint economic work with the islands.
