The Obama Portraits Tour comes to the MFAH after premiering at the Art Institute of Chicago in June 2021 and traveling to the Brooklyn Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), and the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. Following the Houston presentation, the tour continues to the de Young Museum in San Francisco and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
The two paintings present a striking contrast to the formality of earlier presidential portraits and images of first ladies. Through the presentation of these now-iconic works by Wiley and Sherald, the exhibition contemplates how portraiture has given visual form to ideas of power, identity, status, and legacy throughout history.
The Obama Portraits Tour is expected to reach millions of people who might not otherwise have an opportunity to view these remarkable paintings. In addition to the paintings themselves, the exhibition features audio-visual elements and educational programs. This special presentation enhances conversations surrounding the power of portraiture and its potential to engage communities.

The 44th president of the United States arrived on Saturday, and is expected to be on-Island for much of August, according to multiple sources. Throughout his presidency, Obama and his family took summer holidays on the Vineyard, and showed a fondness for Chilmark.
After leaving office, Obama continued to vacation in Chilmark with his family. Golfing, bicycling, and visiting some of the Island’s restaurants are among the president’s August pastimes on-Island. On Sunday he reportedly dined at the Red Cat in Oak Bluffs.

President Donald Trump revealed Saturday the United States intends to withdraw from a 31-year-old nuclear weapons agreement with Russia, delivering a severe blow to the arms control regime that helped preserve peace since the Cold War.
“We’re going to terminate the agreement and we’re going to pull out,” Trump told reporters after a rally in Elko, Nevada, without indicating what the next steps might be.
The Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, first signed by President Ronald Reagan and Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev in December 1987, was the first and only nuclear arms control agreement that ever eliminated an entire class of nuclear weapons. The treaty forced the superpowers to scrap more than 2,600 missiles with ranges 310 to 3,420 miles — weapons considered destabilizing to the European continent because of their capability to launch a nuclear strike from anywhere without early warning.
