Moscow is talking about opening the “Far East Front” as Japan announced that “the Kuril Islands are a territorial territory of the country that is illegally under Russian occupation.”
This is the first official territorial claim of Japan against Russia that “fires” in the region as China has sided with Russia while in the middle there is “North Korea” that does not “like” Tokyo and Seoul.
In fact, because of this dispute, Russia and Japan have not yet signed a peace treaty to end World War II!
Earlier this week, Russia said it was withdrawing from negotiations with Japan to sign a peace treaty amid Tokyo’s tough stance against Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
The Kuril Islands in the Pacific are four islands – which Russia calls the “Southern Kurils” and Japan – the “Northern Territories” – and have been the subject of more than 70 years of conflict between the two nations.
Japan had lost the islands to the Soviet Union after its defeat in World War II.
Japan: Hokkaido is under “illegal Russian occupation”
Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi has described the four islands of the archipelago as an integral part of Japan, according to the Tokyo-based Sankei Shimbun newspaper.
On March 31, the Ministry of Defense of Japan published a draft of the 2022 Annual Foreign Policy Report.
“This territory belongs to Japan but was illegally occupied by Russia,” the draft said.
The Japanese Foreign Ministry will now call the Kuril Islands a part of Japan occupied by the Russian Federation,” Japanese media reported.
Earlier, the Japanese prime minister announced the “redefinition of the country’s foreign policy”, stressing that “the Northern Territories (including the Kuril Islands) are a territory that belongs to Japan, a territory in which Japan has sovereignty.”
Later, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida condemned Russia for occupying the southern part of the Kuril Islands.
In a statement to Parliament, he said that the islands are “territories of Japan”
