History repeats itself for Russia: The Finnish Parliament approved the country’s membership in NATO, breaking the historic agreement with Russia on neutrality.
56% of the members of the Finnish parliament, 112 of the 200 Finnish MPs voted in favor of the country joining the North Atlantic Alliance a few hours ago.
This means that in the next 1-2 weeks Finland will send a formal application for the country to join NATO.
Consequently, the cause of the “Winter War” of 1939 reappears, which led to the second conflict, the “War of Continuity”.
Finland overturns agreement – Cause of two historic wars….
In 1938, the then USSR worried about the possibility of a two-sided struggle with Hitler’s Germany. In particular, he believed that the Germans would transfer forces to their ally Finland and from there they would advance to St. Petersburg (then Leningrad), which was only 32 km from the Finnish border.
Therefore, in April 1938, they demanded the transfer of Finnish territory to the Karelian Isthmus in order to create a “Buffer Zone” around Leningrad. In return, the Finns would be given Soviet territory on the northern border between the two countries.
The request was not accepted. And the war started.
From 1941 to 1944, the “War of Continuity” by Finland and Nazi Germany followed as allies against the Soviet Union. In Russian history, the war is called the Finnish Front of the Great Patriotic War.
In both wars the then USSR sought the “neutrality” of Finland, and the protection of St. Petersburg by repelling enemy military forces. The same arguments put forward by Moscow in the war in Ukraine.
These are now overturned by Finland’s accession to NATO.
British armored vehicles and tanks have already appeared in Finland for “preparatory exercises” for NATO membership.
