Iran, Russia and China are preparing to hold a series of major military exercises in Latin America in a show of force on the US’s doorstep.
Venezuela, under the leadership of socialist President Nicolas Maduro, is scheduled to host the war games in mid-August, according to a report by the Center for a “Secure Free Society,” a think tank that monitors the region’s regimes.
Along with 10 other nations, Russia, China and Iran will move their military forces to the Western Hemisphere for military exercises that will “intent militarily in Latin America and the Caribbean.”
They join the “multipolar world”
The war games, known as the Sniper Frontier competition, show these powers from around the world coming together and “preparing to make a resounding statement that the region is ready to embrace multipolar power,” according to the think-tank’s report. , which focuses on Latin America’s embrace of authoritarian regimes.
The military exercises are one of the strongest signs yet that the Latin American coalition against the U.S. working to strengthen relations with Russia, China and Iran.
Maduro recently completed a diplomatic tour of the Middle East in which he signed a 20-year strategic deal with Iran that laid the groundwork for an Iranian oil tanker to dock in Venezuela and offload Tehran’s illicit crude oil.
“The strategic agreement between Iran and Venezuela is intended to mirror similar strategic agreements the Islamic Republic has signed with China and Russia in recent years,” according to the think-tank’s report. Latin American regimes are also entering into military agreements with Russia.
