The Russian government has ordered the Jewish Agency to stop all activities inside the country for the first time in 30 years.
Information indicates that there is a race going on from Israel, from the Foreign Ministry and the Prime Minister, in order to overturn the Russian decision, as if it is implemented, the immigration flows to the Jewish state will stop to a very large extent.
The Jewish Agency, an unofficial arm of the Israeli government, is charged with overseeing and encouraging immigration to Israel, or aliyah. Those wishing to immigrate to Israel must apply through the Jewish Agency. The organization also conducts educational programs and a number of other activities.
To facilitate these efforts, the organization maintains offices in many countries and cities around the world, including Moscow. In recent years, tens of thousands of Russian citizens have immigrated to Israel, with around 10,000 arriving just since the start of the war in Ukraine in late February.
The Kremlin’s decision to shut down the activities of the Jewish Agency, which has operated in Russia since the Soviet Union and the late communist era, would mean a dramatic deterioration in ties between the two countries and could complicate efforts by Jews to leave Russia.
Over a million people from the former Soviet Union have moved to Israel in the past two decades.
The order comes amid growing tension between Israel and Russia over Jerusalem’s stance on the war in Ukraine and support for Kiev and Volodymyr Zelensky. On Monday, the Russian Foreign Ministry called the Israeli raids in Syria unacceptable.
“Shut down the Jewish Agency”
The Russian government ordered the Jewish Agency to cease all activities within the country.
The order was given in a letter sent by the Russian Ministry of Justice earlier this week. Jewish Agency officials confirmed receipt of the letter. They did not, however, comment on the response, which is currently being considered at the organization’s offices in Jerusalem in consultation with the Foreign Ministry and the Prime Minister’s Office.
“As part of the work of the Jewish Agency delegation in Russia, we are occasionally required to make certain adjustments as required by the authorities ,” the agency said.
