(Update 11.45) The former prime minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, who was shot in the back early Friday morning (Greece time), during his speech at a Liberal Democratic Party event in the city of Nara, succumbed to his injuries.
The news was reported by the Reuters agency, citing the Japanese NHK.
Earlier, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said his predecessor was in a “very serious condition” after the gunman attacked him and called the attempt on his life a “barbaric act”.

According to a source close to the fire department in the area, “former prime minister Abe appears to be in a state of cardiorespiratory arrest ,” public broadcaster NHK reported, using Japanese authorities’ terminology when someone’s death remains to be determined by a medical examiner.
According to a Japanese government spokesman, Mr. Abe was attacked by the gunman at around 11:30 a.m. (local time).
Abe’s rule as prime minister before he stepped down in 2020 brought stability to Japan. He helped Japan escape a cycle of deflation and worked to improve ties with its biggest trading partner, China, which were at their most hostile in decades when he took office.
Abe is perhaps best known for his plans to revive Japan’s faltering economy through unprecedented monetary easing and regulatory reform eventually dubbed “Abenomics”.
He is seen as a stabilizing factor who has consolidated power during his record-breaking run and has been able to overcome scandals, including one that came to light in 2017 over questionable government land allocations for schools given to associates of Abe and his wife Akie.
