The most critical meeting of recent years between Iran, Russia and Turkey has begun in Astana. The presidents of the three countries will meet first in pairs and then all together after meeting the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The meeting is expected to determine Iran’s course and Turkey’s choices, while it is no coincidence that for the sake of this meeting, RT Erdogan postponed his visit to the Occupied countries.
It is also significant that this Summit comes after US President Joe Biden’s visit to Saudi Arabia and the wider Middle East.
Invitation to join Turkey in BRICS+
The three leaders are expected to decide:
– For Ukraine’s grain trade through Turkey,
The accession of Turkey to BRICS+ and the participation of the Turkish lira in the basket of BRICS+ currencies
– Eurasian integration and Turkey’s inclusion in the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC)
– The issue of Syria and a possible new Turkish invasion. Russia and Iran are opposed to a new Turkish invasion, something they are expected to emphasize to Erdogan. He is expected to be told that the ” solution must and will be provided by the Syrian Army”
Whatever Erdogan decides, it will change the shape of Turkey. If he accepts the Russian-Iranian invitation and moves again towards Eurasia, he will break with the West. If he refuses it, there will be consequences in Syria and beyond.
