The Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, is headed to Taiwan! This was announced a while ago by senior officials of the USA and Taiwan and now the worst is ahead for the Indo-Pacific region.
Whether or not Pelosi manages to land in Taiwan, the region is entering a period of war as China accelerates preparations for reunification with Taiwan using military means.
The US is dramatically building up its forces in the region as the US aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan approaches eastern Taiwan. The US aircraft carrier will be reinforced by two more amphibious battle groups with USS Tripoli and USS America carrying F-35B Lightning II fighters.
At the same time, the USS Abraham Lincoln and USS Essex are in the Hawaii area ready to assist if needed.
In total the US Navy has two carrier groups and two to three amphibious assault groups in the region, as well as other reinforcements in Japan, Hawaii and Guam.
In light of the Chinese threats, the US military is reportedly working on contingency plans for any eventuality should Pelosi actually visit Taiwan in August.
The Associated Press reported, citing senior US officials, that the US military plans to further increase the movement of forces and assets in the Indo-Pacific region, which will include the use of fighter jets, ships and surveillance aircraft to create buffer zones around the Pelosi and her plane.
Also, the US military will even have rescue capabilities, including helicopters on ships in the area.
Pelosi heads to Taiwan
US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is expected to visit Taiwan as part of her tour of Asia, a senior Taiwanese government official and a US official said, US sources said.
A Taiwanese official added that Pelosi is expected to stay in Taiwan overnight. It is unclear exactly when it will land in Taipei.
The US official added that Defense Department officials are working around the clock to monitor any Chinese movements in the area and ensure a plan to keep it safe.
The same information is being broadcast from Taiwan. Several local media outlets in Taiwan, including TVBS, are reporting that Pelosi may land in Taiwan tomorrow night.
A while ago, CNN reported that “US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will visit Taiwan after a stop in Malaysia.”
