A US air strike unit is being sent to Europe to help protect NATO’s eastern flank, in a move prompted by comments from a top Kremlin official who said Russia was waging war not just with Ukraine but with the entire military alliance in Ukrainian territory.
The deployment of the 101st Airborne Division, which has the nickname “Screaming Eagles”, was announced on Thursday 11/8 by the US mission to NATO. He said nearly 2,400 troops would be sent to NATO members Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary and Slovakia to “reassure our Allies and deter our adversaries from a potential threat.”
Kiriyenko’s statements
The day before, Kiriyenko, the first deputy chief of the Russian presidential staff, claimed that the West was conducting a “hot military operation” against Russia in Ukraine.
“We understand very well that on the territory of Ukraine we are not at war with Ukraine and, of course, not with the Ukrainians either,” Russian state news agency Tass reported. “The entire NATO bloc is waging a war against Russia, on Ukrainian soil and at the hands of Ukrainians.”
NATO’s increased presence in Europe comes amid fears that Russia’s ongoing war could extend beyond Ukraine’s borders, potentially sparking a larger conflict between the 30-member NATO alliance and Russian President Putin’s forces.
