Iran’s state television reported that the Iranian navy spotted “several unmanned spy ships in international sea lanes” and “after warnings to a US destroyer in the area, seized two unmanned ships to prevent possible accidents.”
Timothy Hawkins, a spokesman for the US Fifth Fleet, which is deployed in the Middle East, acknowledged that such an incident took place but declined to comment.
The incident is the second of its kind to occur in recent days as negotiations between Tehran and world powers over the nuclear deal are on hold.
A few days ago, men of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard had seized a US drone ship in the Gulf and tried to tow it, but stopped the effort when a US warship and a helicopter approached the scene, according to US sources.
Iran has boosted its naval presence in the Red Sea, off the coast of Yemen, where Tehran supports the Houthi rebels, sending ships to protect Iranian oil tankers and merchant ships against possible pirate attacks.
