For the first time, on Wednesday at 8 o’clock in the morning, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) conducted joint military exercises with American forces associated with the “International Coalition” near the Turkish border.
The drills were announced by SDF media center director Farhad Sami, who said on his Twitter account that the drills took place in a border area between Syria, Turkey and Iraq.
“For the first time, joint military exercises were held in the Derik region in the northeast of Syria, in the village of Takl Bakl,” Kurdish media reported.
The exercises are part of “supporting security, stability and the eventual elimination of ISIS,” Sami said. In fact the Syrian Kurdish forces are preparing to face the Turkish forces as well as to safeguard the supply routes connecting Syria and Iraq.
The exercises involved forces with TOWs, RPGs and Kalashnikovs and US armored personnel carriers, along with several US officers and soldiers.
This is the first time such exercises have been conducted between the SDF and the US-led coalition
The relevant area is approximately 10 km from the Turkish border and 4 km from the border with Iraq.

According to Petros Kranias and capital.gr, the military exercises were preceded by the arrival last Friday of reinforcements of the “coalition” forces in the city of Yaroubiya in the governorate of Hasaka, in northeastern Syria. The convoy consisted of 80 trucks carrying boxes of ammunition, fuel tanks, helmets and flak jackets.
It is noteworthy that the exercises took place in an area that Turkey considers “sensitive”, near the tri-national border between Syria, Turkey and Iraq.
