The international agreement on Iran’s nuclear program, known as the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action), “is dead,” US President Joe Biden said in a video that surfaced on Twitter, without the White House disputing the its authenticity.
The video, which did not specify where it was taken, shows Biden, surrounded by his bodyguards, talking to people behind a metal fence. A woman is seen wearing a ribbon in the colors of the Iranian flag and has her nails painted in the same colors. The place looks like a gym or a multipurpose venue.
The president’s decor and clothes are reminiscent of a campaign event in early November in California, when Biden visited to support a congressional candidate.
“President Biden, are you going to announce that the JCPOA is dead? Can you announce it?’ a woman is heard asking, shaking his hand.
“She’s dead, but we won’t announce it. It’s a long story,” he replies.
“We don’t want an agreement with the mullahs (…) They don’t represent us,” continues his interlocutor.
“I know they don’t represent you. But they’re going to get a nuclear weapon ,” Biden replied.
What is the White House’s response?
“The president’s comments are absolutely consistent with what we’ve been saying about the JCPOA, which is not our priority right now, “ John Kirby, the White House National Security Council spokesman, said when asked about the matter by reporters. .
“We do not expect an agreement to be reached in the near future,” he continued, without confirming that the JCPOA is “dead.”
As far as I know, no one is questioning the authenticity (of the video) and I don’t think we will investigate it,” he added.
The JCPOA agreement
The 2015 JCPOA offered Iran an easing of international sanctions in exchange for assurances from Tehran that it would not acquire a nuclear weapon. Iranian authorities insist they have never had such a goal and that their nuclear program is purely for peaceful purposes.
The Iran nuclear deal was signed at the end of Barack Obama’s second term, after US and Israeli secret services tried for years to reverse the theocratic anti-Western regime’s path to a nuclear program.
After the withdrawal of the US from the JCPOA in 2018 (under the presidency of Trump) and the reinstatement of US sanctions, Tehran gradually stopped meeting its obligations.
Biden has vowed to try to revive the deal, but negotiations that began in April 2021 in Vienna are deadlocked.
