The United States is readying more than $2 billion worth of military aid for Ukraine that is expected to include longer-range rockets for the first time as well as other munitions and weapons, two U.S. officials briefed on the matter told Reuters on Tuesday.

The weapons aid is expected to be announced as soon as this week, the officials said. It is also expected to include support equipment for Patriot air defense systems, precision-guided munitions and Javelin anti-tank weapons, they added.

One of the officials said a portion of the package, expected to be $1.725 billion, would come from a fund known as the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI), which allows President Joe Biden’s administration to get weapons from industry rather than from existing U.S. weapons stocks.

The USAI funds would go toward the purchase of a new weapon, the Ground Launched Small Diameter Bomb (GLSDB) made by Boeing Co, which have a range of 94 miles (150 km). The United States has rebuffed Ukraine’s requests for the 185-mile (297-km) range ATACMS missile.

The longer range of the GLSDB glide bomb could allow Ukraine to hit targets that have been out of reach and help it continue pressing its counterattacks by disrupting Russia further behind its lines.

Reuters first reported on Boeing’s proposal to field GLSDB for Ukraine in November. At the time it was expected GLSDB could be in Ukraine by spring.

GLSDB is made jointly by SAAB AB and Boeing. It combines the GBU-39 Small Diameter Bomb (SDB) with the M26 rocket motor, both of which are common in U.S. inventories.

GLSDB is GPS-guided, can defeat some electronic jamming, is usable in all weather conditions, and can be used against armored vehicles, according to SAAB’s website. The GBU-39 – which would function as the GLSDB’s warhead – has small, folding wings that allow it to glide more than 100km if dropped from an aircraft and hit targets as small as 3 feet (1 meter) in diameter.

The USAI funds would also be used to pay for more components of HAWK air defenses, counter-drone systems, counter artillery and air surveillance radars, communications equipment, PUMA drones, and spare parts for major systems like Patriot and Bradley, one of the officials said.

It’s unusual to have the FDA chase down a pharma company and ask them apply for a new drug indication. But Pfizer went through just that and has now quietly revealed a label expansion for blockbuster breast cancer med Ibrance.

The FDA has extended Ibrance’s approval in combination with an aromatase inhibitor to include newly diagnosed HR-positive, HER2-negative metastatic breast cancer patients regardless of menopausal status, Pfizer said Tuesday.

Previously, the combination of Ibrance and an aromatase inhibitor was limited to use in postmenopausal women. The FDA granted the new approval in mid-December, according to an approval letter (PDF), but Pfizer snuck the news into its fourth-quarter earnings announcement Tuesday.

There are other unconventional elements in this approval beyond Pfizer’s late, low-profile revelation.

For one, a review of Ibrance’s updated prescription information (PDF) shows no new efficacy data in the patient population.

The clinical efficacy section of Ibrance’s label still only includes results from the phase 3 PALOMA-2 trial—which tested a combination of Ibrance and Novartis’ aromatase inhibitor Femara in postmenopausal women newly diagnosed with HR+/HER2- breast cancer—and from the phase 3 PALOMA-3 study. The latter study tested Ibrance with AstraZeneca’s SERD drug Faslodex in previously treated patients regardless of menopausal status.

Ibrance’s expansion comes more than four years after Novartis’ Kisqali became the first CDK4/6 inhibitor approved for this patient population when used with an aromatase inhibitor as initial endocrine-based therapy. That Novartis nod made history back in July 2018 as the first granted under the FDA’s real-time oncology review framework, which allows for simultaneous data submission and FDA review.

At that time, Kisqali’s broad label was based on tumor progression data from the phase 3 MONALEESA-7 trial in pre- or perimenopausal women. The trial later showed Kisqali could significantly prolong patients’ lives, too, when compared with placebo in their respective combinations with an aromatase inhibitor.

While Novartis designed MONALEESA-7 to persuade the FDA, it was the FDA that proactively reached out to Pfizer in this case. In December 2021, the FDA requested that Pfizer file an application to include pre/perimenopausal women in Ibrance’s label, according to an FDA approval letter dated Dec. 13, 2022. Pfizer responded to the FDA’s request and submitted its application on March 11, 2022, the approval letter shows.

The unusual approval raises a question around the basis of FDA’s decision to request—and then approve—the Ibrance expansion.

In a statement to Fierce Pharma, the agency pointed to its guidance published mid-2021 on developing drugs for premenopausal women with breast cancer. The agency noted that these young women have historically been excluded from clinical trials, and running new studies has led to delays in availability of treatment.

For drugs like Ibrance that target the hormonal axis, the “FDA believes these drugs when given to premenopausal women with adequate estrogen suppression are likely to have generally the same efficacy and safety profile as in postmenopausal women, based on a review of the nonclinical, clinical pharmacology, and clinical literature,” the FDA said.

This isn’t the first time that Pfizer and the FDA went beyond regulatory norms to get Ibrance an approval. Back in 2019, the FDA used real-world evidence to grant Ibrance an approval for use alongside either an aromatase inhibitor or Faslodex in men with breast cancer.

The new approval comes as Ibrance is under increased pressure from Novartis’ Kisqali and Eli Lilly’s Verzenio, particularly after the final overall survival analysis of the PALOMA-2 trial found Ibrance didn’t significantly improve patients’ life expectancy.

For 2022, Ibrance sold $3.37 billion in the U.S., down 1% year over year. Pfizer has attributed the drug’s stagnant performance to more patients using the drug through an assistance program.

US President Joe Biden’s administration has reportedly accused Russia of violating the last remaining nuclear weapons treaty between the two countries by blocking on-site inspections.

The US State Department made the allegation – marking the first US claim that Moscow breached terms of the New START treaty – in a report sent to Congress on Tuesday, the Wall Street Journal reported. The report also claimed that Russian officials had rejected US requests to hold a meeting to address compliance concerns.

“Russia’s refusal to facilitate inspection activities prevents the United States from exercising important rights under the treaty and threatens the viability of US-Russian nuclear arms control,” the State Department said in a statement to Reuters.

The conflict may add to concerns that the world’s two largest nuclear superpowers may no longer be able to work together on nonproliferation goals amid deteriorating relations between Washington and Moscow. The Kremlin said earlier this month that US-Russian relations were probably at an all-time low and offered no hope of improving as Washington intervened against Moscow in the Ukraine crisis.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists warned last week that a nuclear arms race will ensue if New START is allowed to expire in 2026, as scheduled, without being replaced. New START, which then-Presidents Barack Obama and Peter Medvedev signed in 2010, replaced the soon-to-expire Treaty of Moscow and called for halving the number of strategic nuclear missile launchers emplaced around the world.

Russia has a “clear path” for resuming compliance with the treaty, and the US stands ready to collaborate with Moscow on fully implanting the deal, the State Department said. In November, the Kremlin canceled New START talks that had been scheduled to take place in Cairo. Russia’s Foreign Ministry said there was no possibility of resuming negotiations while the US was continuing to arm Ukraine.

“The US intends to supply even more weapons to the conflict region, in which the Russian Federation is directly involved,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at the time. “That is, they will supply all these weapons, they will encourage the Kiev regime to cause even more bloodshed, they will allocate money for extremist activities that are carried out under the auspices of these delusional people. And we will sit with them at the same table and discuss issues of mutual security with them, including those in their interest?”

French President Emmanuel Macron has said that the idea of sending fighter jets to Ukraine had not been “excluded,” as Kiev ramps up its campaign to pressure the West into donating combat aircraft to its military.

Asked about the possibility of transferring jets to Kiev’s military, Macron told reporters that “nothing is excluded in principle,” according to France’s AFP news agency. The president added that Kiev would be forbidden from using French jets to attack Russian soil.

Macron was speaking after a meeting with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, who told reporters that his government saw “no taboo” around sending US-made F-16 fighters to Ukraine, but admitted it would be a “big step.”

For nearly a year, the idea of sending Ukraine any jets – let alone Western-designed ones – was considered too escalatory by the NATO powers. In a matter of days, however, the idea has now gone from a “high risk” hypothetical – in the words of the Pentagon last March – to a proposal under serious consideration.

According to various media reports, the UK has dismissed the idea of delivering its Typhoon warplanes as “too escalatory,” while the US is discussing the idea of handing over its planes “very carefully” with the rest of the NATO bloc, amid pressure from the military industrial complex and its partners in the Pentagon. Poland is willing to transfer its F-16s if other NATO members follow suit, while Germany has – for now – declared a Ukrainian request that it hand over its Tornado fighters “out of the question.”

The debate over sending jets to Ukraine appears to be following the same trajectory as the months-long discussion over tanks. By the time France, Germany, the UK and US all agreed to donate tanks this month, the decision had been telegraphed through increasingly concrete government-sourced reports in Western media.

Ukrainian officials believed throughout that their Western backers would eventually cave and announce tank deliveries. The country’s foreign minister ridiculed Germany’s public recalcitrance, insisting that Berlin would “do it anyway,” long before the formal announcement was made.

Kiev appears equally hopeful about receiving aircraft from the West. Posting on Facebook last week, the secretary of Ukraine’s National Security Council, Aleksey Danilov, shared a video of American F-16s along with the caption “soon in the sky of Ukraine.”

The US is facing serious economic risks as more countries around the globe move away from the dollar in energy trade, according to former White House official Paul Craig Roberts.

Roberts, who served as US Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Economic Policy during the Reagan administration, cautioned in an article published on Monday that the end of the petrodollar would have severe adverse effects on the value of the dollar, as well as on US inflation and interest rates.

He pointed to Saudi Arabia’s recent announcement that it was open to accepting payment for oil in currencies other than the dollar. According to Roberts, if that happens the demand for dollars and the currency’s value will fall. By billing for oil in dollars, the Saudis guaranteed worldwide demand for the greenback, he explained. “This is a major threat to Washington’s power and to the financial power of American banks,” the economist added.

Roberts noted that for half a century the petrodollar has supported the value of the US dollar and ensured financing for America’s large budget and trade deficits. “The petrodollar supported the continuing role of the dollar as world currency after President Nixon closed the gold window in 1971, in effect ending the Bretton Woods system following WWII that gave the US dollar the reserve currency role.”

However, according to Roberts, in recent years Washington has so abused the dollar’s reserve currency role with sanctions and asset seizes that many countries desire to settle trade imbalances in their own currencies, “in order to escape Washington’s ability to threaten and punish them for serving their own interests rather than Washington’s.”

The article stated if the Saudis do drop the petrodollar, Americans will face stiff inflation and high interest rates necessary to finance US budget deficits, unless the Federal Reserve itself finances the deficits by printing money. In that case, monetary inflation would be added to inflation caused by the drop in the dollar’s foreign exchange value resulting from declining foreign demand for the greenback. “Should this come to pass the implication for the US is massive austerity,” Roberts warned.

A massive fire engulfed a large egg farm on Saturday. The huge blaze likely killed thousands of chickens, and is expected to exacerbate the current dilemma of skyrocketing egg prices.

Around 1 p.m. on Saturday, a three-alarm fire was reported at the Hillandale Farms property in Bozrah, Connecticut. WSFB reported that a total of 21 fire departments responded to the three-alarm fire, and it took firefighters eight hours to put out the blaze.

Norwich Firefighters Local 892 said a two-story, 400-foot by 100-foot chicken coop was on fire. The fire was so large that it could be seen from miles away. John Way, a safety officer for the Bozrah Volunteer Fire Co., said the coop housed an unknown number of chickens.

Multiple local reports cited the Salvation Army that around 100,000 chickens were killed, but that number has not been confirmed. No injuries were reported. The cause of the massive fire at the egg farm was not immediately clear. Authorities are still investigating the blaze.

Hillandale Farms said it raises over 20 million chickens for eggs and is one of the top five egg producers in the country. Hendrix Genetics lists Hillandale Farms as the third-biggest egg producer in the U.S. with 20 million hens. There have been several major fires at egg farms in the past few years.

In December 2022, a fire caused $12 million in damages and killed a reported 250,000 chickens at a large poultry farm in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, according to WGAL. In October 2022, approximately 7,000 chickens were incinerated in a farm fire in Lexington, South Carolina.

In February 2020, a blaze at the Michael Foods farm killed approximately 400,000 chickens. In December 2020, around 240,000 chickens died when a fire burned three barns in Pasco County, Florida. The fire happened at a Cal-Maine-operated egg farm, which is “one the largest producer and distributor of shell eggs in the United States. It sells under brands including Egg-Land’s Best and Land O’ Lakes,” according to CBS News.

The Animal Welfare Institute reported that nearly 1.3 million cage-free hens “perished in potentially preventable barn fires” in 2020. In December, egg prices skyrocketed 60% more than a year prior, according to Consumer Price Index data.

For infectious diseases experts at the World Health Organisation (WHO), the job is never done.

While the immediate dangers of the coronavirus appear to be over three years on from the respiratory disease bursting out of Wuhan, China, and bringing the entire world to a standstill, epidemiologists must remain vigilant for the next virus that has the theoretical potential to explode into a public health emergency.

The organisation has kept a list of “priority pathogens” since 2017, which compiles the diseases that pose the greatest potential threat to humanity and which we are, at present, most in need of more research into in order to ensure we are in a position to tackle them should they begin to spread.

The list, used by governments and public health organisations to guide their planning, will soon be revised again after the WHO brought together 300 scientists in November to reassess the danger represented by 25 viruses and bacteria with a view to reprioritising it.

“Targeting priority pathogens and virus families for research and development of countermeasures is essential for a fast and effective epidemic and pandemic response,” Dr Michael Ryan, executive director of WHO’s Health Emergencies Programme, said at the time.

We can expect an update in the coming months.

The coronavirus tops the present list but, putting that aside since we are all so well acquainted with it, here are the other eight viruses currently of most concern to WHO experts.

WASHINGTON, January 31. /TASS/. Washington is committed to using conventional and nuclear deterrents to protect South Korea, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said at a joint press conference with South Korean Minister of National Defense Lee Jong-sup in Seoul on Tuesday.

Austin pointed out that the United States “is committed to using the full range of conventional and nuclear deterrents to protect South Korea.”

The US defense chief also noted that North Korea had staged an unprecedented number of provocations in 2022. Washington and Seoul condemn such actions that destabilize the region, Austin added.

According to a joint statement by the two countries’ defense chiefs, they “pledged to further expand and bolster the level and scale of this year’s combined exercises and training.” “To this end, the two leaders concurred on the need to take into account changes in the security environment, including the DPRK’s recent steps with respect to its nuclear and missile programs,” the statement reads.

In addition, Lloyd Austin and Lee Jong-sup emphasized that the two nations would “enhance information sharing.”

Austin noted that 28,500 US troops were stationed in South Korea, constituting one of the largest US overseas troop contingents. The two countries made much progress in boosting cooperation in the past year, the Pentagon chief said, adding that the US and South Korea had stepped up retaliatory measures amid threats from North Korea.

Austin arrived in South Korea on a visit on Monday.

Doctors couldn’t figure out what was wrong with Devin Buckley.

It was February 2018, and the previously healthy 18-year-old found that he couldn’t walk to the bathroom without becoming winded. That was in addition to the rapid weight loss, stomach problems and extreme fatigue that seemed to come out of nowhere.

The campus health center at the University of Arizona in Tucson, where Buckley was enrolled as a freshman, had no answers. Neither did anyone at urgent care.

Buckley was home in Chicago for spring break when he wound up in the intensive care unit, struggling to breathe. It was there that he was finally diagnosed with Valley fever, after a family friend suggested the doctors test for it.

“It blew my mind that something so serious could be not known,” Buckley, 24, said. “When I first got diagnosed, the word cancer was going around with some of the doctors — like they were screening me for that. So it just goes to show you how serious of a disease it is if doctors seeing it think the first thing I have is cancer.”

Valley fever is an infection caused by breathing in spores of the fungus coccidioides. The spores can survive through heat and drought, lingering in the soil. When the dirt is disturbed — through construction, wind or even walking — the spores can be lofted into the air.

The fungus is endemic to the hot, dry soils of the Southwest; 97% of all U.S. cases of Valley fever are reported in Arizona and California, according to the California Department of Public Health.

But that could change: Fungal infections, including Valley fever, are increasingly being diagnosed outside of their usual ranges. One study in the journal GeoHealth projected that, due to climate change, the range of Valley fever could spread east, through the Great Plains and north, to the Canadian border, before the end of the century

“As the temperatures warm up, and the western half of the U.S. stays quite dry, our desert-like soils will kind of expand and these drier conditions could allow coccidioides to live in new places,” said Morgan Gorris, who led the GeoHealth study while at the University of California, Irvine, and is now a staff scientist at the Los Alamos National Laboratory.
