For the first time in months, warships, submarines and landing craft of the Russian Navy suddenly and en masse sailed from the Novorossiysk naval base in the Black Sea.
The move has alarmed Romania-NATO and Ukraine as it appears that Russia may be planning an amphibious operation in Odesa that may coincide with the upcoming Russian ground operation from Western Ukraine.
NATO and Ukraine have detected a sudden movement of Russian warships and submarines from their base in Novorossiysk. The naval base, near the Kerch bridge, is further from the controlled Ukrainian coast than the famous base in Sevastopol. However, unusual movement can be significant.
This morning ships and submarines of the Russian Navy left their base in Novorossiysk in the Black Sea en masse, something very unusual.
The team included the Project 11 711 lvan Gren-class landing ship Pyotr Morgunov, the largest landing craft in the Black Sea.
The three Project 636.3 Improved-Kilo class
submarines at the station also sailed. The analysis shows that other warships also departed, leaving only a few support ships in port
The Pyotr Morgunov recently carried supplies from Russia to Sevastopol following the October 8, 2022 Ukrainian attack on the Kerch Bridge. Although Russia has managed some repairs, the bridge has limited capacity. Thus, the landing ships of the Russian Navy operate as means of transport.
However, the simultaneous departure of the
submarines suggests that this may be more than just a supply mission.
