Poland will transfer F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, but only as part of a coordinated effort with other NATO partners, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced at a press conference on Monday.

Morawiecki said Warsaw coordinates all actions pertaining to strengthening Kiev’s defensive capabilities with its NATO partners, primarily with the US, noting the recent decisions to deliver Patriot air defense systems and M1 Abrams and Leopard 2 tanks to Kiev.

“And just as it happened a few months ago with MiG-29 aircraft, any other aircraft assistance will be coordinated, implemented and, possibly, transferred together with other NATO member states. We will act in full coordination here,” Morawiecki said.

The PM’s statement comes after Polish media reported last week that Warsaw had allegedly transferred a number of its MiG-29s to Ukraine in March 2022, disguising them as spare parts – while the US and allies refused to provide Kiev with military aircraft, deeming the move “too escalatory.”

Since Russia launched its military operation in Ukraine in late February last year, Washington has been one of the main suppliers of military aid to Kiev, spending tens of billions of dollars on lethal assistance. However, the US has been hesitant to provide advanced weaponry such as modern warplanes, fearing they could be used to strike Russian territory and ultimately lead to a direct confrontation between Moscow and NATO.

On Saturday, however, it was revealed that a number of US military officials have been “quietly pushing” the Department of Defense to greenlight the delivery of F-16s to Kiev. As reported by Politico, several sources within the Pentagon claim these efforts are now “gaining momentum” after Washington agreed to send tanks and Patriot systems.

Russia has repeatedly warned the West against supplying Ukraine with weapons, arguing that it would only prolong the conflict. Last week, Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov stated that the arms deliveries serve as further proof that Western countries are directly involved in the stand-off between Moscow and Kiev.

North Korea, fraud, and financial losses are some of the dangers emanating from the cryptocurrency industry, according to a White House blog published on Jan. 27. It argued for enhanced oversight of cryptocurrencies more broadly, requesting help from financial regulatory bodies and Congressional lawmakers.

The blog—co-written by national security adviser Jake Sullivan, National Economic Council Director Brian Deese, Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Arati Prabhakar, and Council of Economic Advisors Chair Cecilia Rouse—outlined the administration’s strategy for mitigating the risks associated with cryptocurrencies.

The White House officials described digital assets as a nascent industry with promise but one that must be reined in for the sake of consumers. Sullivan has long been sounding the alarm with respect to cryptocurrencies, which he placed on the administration’s radar back in June of 2021, following the highly publicized ransomware attack on the Colonial Pipeline.

The White House pointed to North Korea to justify the need for further legislation, highlighting that a lack of security protocols allowed North Korea to “steal over a billion dollars to fund its aggressive missile program.” This refers to allegations by South Korea’s main spy agency that their northern neighbor employed state-sponsored hackers to extract $1.2 billion from various digital asset projects.

“Privacy coins”—cryptocurrencies that algorithmically “wash” transactions to obfuscate their ownership history—appear to be in the sights of the Biden administration as well. The briefing linked to a 2022 report (pdf) that listed privacy coins under the “Malicious Acts” section of the report, mentioning that such tokens are the preferred medium of exchange for criminals and bad actors.

Proponents of the popular privacy coin Monero view the ability to transact with anonymity as one of the core tenets underpinning the crypto movement.

The White House urged Congress to pass new laws to help curb criminal activity in the digital asset space. Suggestions included steeper penalties for illicit financial affiliations and additional transparency requirements for crypto-related companies.

A push to partner with international lawmakers was a key focus of the blog as well. Many have blamed foreign nations with lax legal frameworks for facilitating much of the fraud in the space.

“These foreign exchanges have virtually no regulation,” said macroeconomic strategist Jim Bianco in an interview with Wealthion. Bianco, however, recognized the risk that regulators may become co-opted by the companies they are intended to regulate, using FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried as an example.

“A lot of people in the industry were very uncomfortable with him because they didn’t think he represented the best interests of the industry,” Bianco said. “He was going to use his vision of regulation to build a moat around FTX.”

Urging caution in regulation was a theme in the blog as well. White House officials warned that laws incentivizing further investment into crypto should be avoided.

MOSCOW, January 30. /TASS/. The United States has transferred military biological equipment from Ukraine to chemical and pharmacological sites in Poland and the Baltic States, Chief of Russia’s Radiation, Chemical and Biological Protection Force Igor Kirillov said on Monday.

“As part of activities to wind down military biological operations in Ukraine, the United States are proactively engaging the material base of chemical and pharmacological plants of Poland and the Baltic States; furthermore, equipment from the Ukrainian territory was delivered there,” the official said.

The Pentagon aims at creating biological weapons components and testing them on the population of Ukraine and other countries along the perimeter of the Russian border, Kirillov said. “During the special military operation, Russian servicemen obtained more than 20,000 documents and reference and analytical materials; witnesses and participants in US military biological programs were questioned. The aforementioned materials confirm the Pentagon’s intention to create biological weapons components and test them on the population of Ukraine and other countries along the perimeter of our borders,” he noted.

Washington is also transferring the functions of contracting military biological activities to civilian agencies, Kirillov said. “Under pressure from the global community, Washington is changing its approaches towards organization of military biological activity, shifting the customer functions to purely civilian agencies – the Department of Health, the Department of Energy, and the Agency for International Development,” the official noted. This will enable the US administration to avoid criticism on international platforms and put the US Department of Defense and the Defense Threat Reduction Agency “out of harm’s way,” he added.

At least 47 people have been killed by a bomb that apparently targeted policeman praying in a mosque in Peshawar, Pakistan.

Officials say people are still buried under the rubble.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said “terrorists want to create fear by targeting those who perform the duty of defending Pakistan”.

No group has said it carried out the attack, but it has been linked to the Pakistan Taliban.

The group ended a ceasefire in November, and violence has been on the rise since.

In December it targeted a police station – like Peshawar, in the north-west of the country – leading to the deaths of 33 militants.

Early unconfirmed reports said a bomber had blown himself up in the mosque.

Peshawar police chief Muhammad Ijaz Khan told local media that between 300 and 400 police officials were in the area at the time.

In a statement, PM Sharif said those behind the attack “have nothing to do with Islam“. He added: “The entire nation is standing united against the menace of terrorism.”

The blast took place around 13:30 (08:30 GMT) during afternoon prayers in the north-western city, near the country’s border with Afghanistan.

A video circulating on social media and verified by the BBC showed that half of a wall caved in. The mosque was covered in bricks and debris as people clambered over the rubble to escape.

A rescue operation is continuing inside the mosque and “more bodies are being taken out,” Peshawar city Deputy Commissioner Shafiullah Khan said.

“Currently our priority is to save people buried under the debris,” Mr Khan added.

Mohammad Asim, a spokesman for the city’s Lady Reading Hospital, said that some of those injured were in a critical condition.

“It’s an emergency situation,” Mr Asim added.

Lady Reading Hospital has declared an emergency and told the BBC they were still receiving those injured.

The prime minister travelled to Peshawar on an emergency visit, where he will be briefed by local officials and visit those wounded by the blast.

Last March, Peshawar was the target of another bombing, which killed dozens in a Shia mosque.

In the capital, Islamabad Police issued a security high-alert and said security at all entry and exit points to the city had been increased.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said he would urge Israelis and Palestinians to calm tensions as he visits on Monday during the worst violence in years, and reaffirmed a long-stalled peace vision as the “only path” forward.

Blinken discussed ongoing efforts to de-escalate tensions between Israelis and Palestinians in a meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in Cairo on Monday, US State Department spokesman Ned Price said.

Blinken also “noted the importance of unified international support for holding elections in Libya, and underscored the importance of the Framework Political Agreement to the democratic aspirations of the Sudanese people,” Price said in a statement.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken held talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Monday during a three-day visit to the Middle East that comes during a flare-up of violence between Israel and the Palestinians.

Blinken says US will keep pressing Egypt on human rights

The United States will continue to encourage Egypt to take steps on human rights, including freeing more political prisoners and guaranteeing freedom of expression, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said during a visit to Cairo on Monday.

After talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, Blinken told reporters that Egypt had taken “important strides” in protecting religious freedoms, empowering women, and releasing some prisoners.

“But the concerns that we have remained and in the spirit of candor and the spirit of the partnership we have, we expressed those very clearly,” Blinken said, adding that he had raised the cases of individual prisoners.

The US official arrived in Cairo on Sunday on a three-day regional tour that coincides with an escalation of violence between Israel and the Palestinians.

Blinken said he wanted to strengthen Washington’s strategic partnership with Egypt, a major recipient of US military aid that has helped mediate in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the past.

Under Sisi, who as army chief led the 2013 ouster of Egypt’s first democratically elected president, there has been a long crackdown on political dissent that has swept up liberal critics as well as Islamists.

Rights groups say tens of thousands have been detained, with many held in pre-trial detention for long periods.

In recent months, Egypt has released some prominent political prisoners amid steps to address international criticism, though many others remain behind bars and new arrests have been made.

Reforms to pre-trial detention and other law enforcement practices, and protecting the work of civil society, were among the areas where Washington would seek “concrete progress,” Blinken said.

The United States has withheld small amounts of military aid to Cairo, citing a failure to meet human rights conditions, and advocacy groups have pushed for more to be held back.

While in Egypt, Blinken met a group of activists including prominent campaigner Hossam Bahgat.

“He was already well aware of the magnitude of Egypt’s human rights crisis and that many more new political prisoners are detained than those the regime claims to be pardoning,” Bahgat told Reuters after meeting Blinken.

“I think the Biden administration now accepts that two years of engaging Sisi on human rights have not led to much improvement.”

Sisi has argued that security measures over the past decade were needed to stabilize Egypt and that authorities are protecting rights, including by working to provide basic needs such as housing and jobs.

Blinken’s meeting with Sisi also addressed regional issues including attempts to relaunch a political transition in Sudan and to break the deadlock between rival factions in Libya, according to a statement from US State Department spokesperson Ned Price.

Being given a whole new body might sound like something from a sci-fi movie but a New Zealander says a new genetic treatment has felt just like that.

Hereditary angioedema is a rare immune deficiency that causes random, disabling and potentially lethal swelling.

It is estimated one in 50,000 people are living with the disorder.

Judy Knox had lived with hereditary angioedema for decades.

Without medication, the attacks were debilitating.

“I would get swelling in the abdomen and it makes you feel a lot of pain and also you get a lot of nausea and vomiting. It can be quite prolonged, lasting as long as six to eight hours,” Knox said.

Children have a 50 percent chance of inheriting the gene if their parent has it.

Rose was diagnosed at five years old and had weekly attacks.

“As a child, I was in and out of hospital for treatment… I missed out on quite a few things that any normal child got to do and it was always in the back of my mind. I missed a lot of school growing up also,” she said.

The swelling was often triggered by injuries or illness, Rose said.

University of Auckland immunologist Dr Hilary Longhurst said the condition was hard to diagnose and very dangerous if left unchecked.

“When people go to their doctors with this condition, they’ll be treated for allergies but allergy treatments don’t work. So the families will learn that actually there’s no point in going to the emergency room, there’s no point in going to the doctor,” Longhurst said.

“If they don’t have the correct diagnosis, they’ll suffer in silence, often for many years.”

But Judy Knox and Rose are two of 10 people with hereditary angioedema who have had no symptoms for months.

US company, Intellia Therapeutics, chose New Zealand to be the first place to trial a ground-breaking gene-editing technology in late 2021 and 2022.

Longhurst, the principal investigator, said the therapy was delivered via a miniscule ball of fat.

“It’s an injection or an infusion that gives a substance that goes to the liver and releases a bit of genetic material which snips the gene causing the problem,” she said.

“The gene heals naturally and the treatment material is removed naturally by the body over a few days.”

Each transfusion was given at the New Zealand Clinical Research facility in Auckland, with each patient intensely monitored.

Rose said the eight months since her infusion had been incredible.

“I’ve been able to push my body physically more than I ever have been before and those nights where you don’t get much sleep are no longer triggers [for an attack],” she said.

“It’s like living with a new body again really because… the options are unlimited now.”

Knox felt ecstatic to no longer be reliant on medication – which she was not using for the first time in 35 years.

“All of the medication that we have is not funded. It costs a huge amount. I mean, the injections alone, just the little ones I still carry in case of a flare up – they’re $1500 to $2000 each,” she said.

“With this gene-editing treatment, it removes all of that. Plus, it makes your life safe.”

Knox’s son also had the gene and lived remotely.

Texting him was the first thing she did after realising the treatment was working.

“It’s such a relief… I said to him ‘hey listen, this is wonderful – put your hand up and get it done’.”

It was something Longhurst was committed to.

“My ambition is that people with hereditary angioedema will be able to live a normal life without symptoms, and it’s almost in our grasp,” Longhurst said.

Rose was overcome by emotion talking about the difference the treatment made to her life, and had a message for others.

“To anyone living with a rare disease, there are new, promising medications being developed constantly, so… don’t give up. Don’t give up on hope. There are always things being developed that can be life-changing,” she said.

The 10 patients undergoing the treatment will continue to be monitored monthly, and if results continue to be successful, the technology may also be used to treat other conditions.

This weekend’s drone attack on an Iranian military site could lead to greater tension and unpredictable consequences for the Middle East, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Monday.

Iranian officials said on Sunday morning that the country’s air defense forces had foiled a raid on an industrial facility in the city of Isfahan. Videos on social media showed an explosion at the site.

“We strongly condemn any provocative action that could lead to an uncontrolled escalation of tensions in an already volatile region,” Zakharova stated.

“Such destructive actions can have unpredictable consequences for peace and stability in the Middle East,” the spokeswoman added. She said that the risks should be understood by those behind the attack, as well as “those who cheer on, with a futile hope of weakening Iran.”

According to the Iranian Defense Ministry, the attack caused only minor damage, and there were no casualties.

No one has claimed responsibility for the incident. The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times quoted unnamed US officials as saying that Israel was behind the raid.

According to the Times, the Israeli intelligence agency, Mossad, orchestrated the attack. Israel has neither confirmed nor denied its involvement.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said that the attack would not affect Tehran’s nuclear program.

The attacks took place against a backdrop of US accusations that Iran has been supplying kamikaze drones to Russia for use in its military operation in Ukraine. The Kremlin, however, maintains that it has used only Russian equipment for strikes on Ukrainian targets.

Iranian trucks crossing from Iraq into Syria were attacked by drones on Sunday, Al Arabiya reported citing “opposition activists and a pro-government radio station.” The al-Qaim crossing is controlled by Iranian fighters, according to local media.

It was not immediately clear who was behind the strike.

The drones allegedly fired a warning shot to allow the truck drivers to abandon their cargo, though there were conflicting reports on whether anyone was hurt. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claimed ambulances rushed to the area to treat the injured, while the Times of Israel suggested there were no reports of injuries.

While an official with an “Iran-backed militia” in Baghdad confirmed there had been an airstrike, he claimed only one truck had been targeted and did not mention casualties.

The attack comes hours after a drone strike on an Iranian weapons factory in Isfahan. Israel was reportedly responsible for that attack, according to US officials cited by the Wall Street Journal. Tehran condemned the assault as a “cowardly” attack meant to spread “insecurity,” confirming its air defenses had brought down one drone and blown up two others.

As RSV and flu cases steadily decline in Canada, the World Health Organization (WHO) is set to announce on Monday whether it still considers COVID-19 a global health emergency.

Ahead of that announcement, one of Canada’s top infectious disease specialists warns that the WHO’s consensus won’t necessarily mean the virus is behind us.

“I think it’s important to point out that this is not about … whether COVID is gone or not,” said Dr. Lisa Barrett, an assistant professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology as well as the Department of Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University.

“This is a real committee-based decision at the WHO level to decide in whether this is still a public health emergency of international concern,” she told CTV News Channel Sunday.

Barrett explained that this a matter of prioritizing access to resources and research, and not to determine an end point for COVID-19.

“So what this all means is that COVID is not done,” she said. “And the way it looks in different countries is different in many situations. That’s what they’re trying to decide at this point, not whether a pandemic is done or whether COVID is going away.”

WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus will make the official call on the status of COVID-19, based on the advice of his committee. Earlier this week, he warned that he remains concerned about the impact of the virus and mentioned that there were 170,000 COVID-related deaths reported around the world in the last two months.

The WHO update comes at a time when concerns over a combination of respiratory illnesses are easing. Canadian data shows that influenza hospitalizations are now dropping.

“We’re starting to see influenza, perhaps RSV, starting to come down somewhat,” Barrett said.

“There’s still a lot of debate about whether we’re catching many cases that are not important. But really, I think the big from the last year as we start to see influenza and RSV maybe go down is, what’s the best way forward?”

Barrett noted that the FDA recommended a change to booster shot roll outs.

“They’re suggesting a once-a-year, similar to a flu shot. I think that’s the right approach at this point,” she said.


“I think the first thing we should remind Canadians is that if they are due for an additional dose in the vulnerable populations — older folks, people who have bad immune systems — please don’t think it’s too early to go out and get that last dose from the fall if you haven’t.”
