The airspace near St. Petersburg, Russia’s second-largest city, has been closed off on Tuesday morning due to the appearance of an unidentified flying object in the area, media have reported.

The city authorities confirmed that Pulkovo International Airport has stopped accepting civilian flights, but didn’t reveal the reason for the move.

The Pulkovo administration said flights will be delayed at least until noon local time (9am GMT). The airport and all its other services are operating as normal, it added.

According to Baza news outlet, jets were scrambled in the air as the so-called Kover (carpet) plan was activated in St. Petersburg. The plan is initiated in the event of an illegal incursion by an aircraft or UFO into the country’s airspace, according to the outlet.

Local outlet Fontanka claimed that the Defense Ministry had told Pulkovo’s administration that an unidentified flying object had been detected between 160km and 200km outside St. Petersburg. According to the procedure, the airport has to stop accepting flights in the event of such an incident.

A source told Ria-Novosti news agency that airspace around the city began reopening shortly after noon. Newspaper Kommersant reported that national air traffic regulator Rosaviatsia has told carriers that restrictions around St Petersburg have been lifted.

Data from website Flightradar24 has also suggested that planes have started to return to the airspace around the city.

A U.S. Navy reconnaissance plane flew down the center of the Taiwan Strait on Monday to assert its right to operate in international airspace amid opposition from China, which wants to push American forces out of the region.

The Navy’s Seventh Fleet said the P-8A maritime patrol aircraft transited the waters between China and Taiwan “in accordance with international law,” and to demonstrate “the United States’ commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific. The United States will continue to fly, sail, and operate anywhere international law allows including within the Taiwan Strait.”

Taiwan ‘s defense ministry confirmed in a public statement that the U.S. military plane traveled from north to south through the waters, which are only 80 miles wide at their narrowest point. Taipei has no formal diplomatic relations with Washington, but counts it as the island’s largest arms supplier.

People’s Liberation Army Col. Shi Yi, a spokesperson for the PLA’s Eastern Theater Command, whose area of responsibility includes the strait, decried the P-8A’s overflight as sensationalism. “The U.S. action deliberately interferes with and undermines the regional situation and endangers peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait,” said Shi.

In recent years, China has stepped up its opposition to U.S. military operations in its nearby sea and airspace. Last year, Chinese officials began publicly insinuating that foreign militaries had no right to operate in the strait, an argument largely predicated on its claim to sovereignty over Taiwan, which the democratically elected government in Taipei rejects, and which Washington doesn’t officially recognize under its one China policy.

Beijing’s attempts to push American operations further away from its shores have come in the form of what Washington says are riskier maneuvers in the air and at sea. These included a Chinese J-11 warplane that came within 20 feet of a U.S. Air Force RC-135 reconnaissance plane last month over the South China Sea, and a similar incident last Friday, also involving a Navy P-8A, witnessed by a traveling press pool on board the aircraft.

“U.S. Navy vessels and aircraft routinely interact with foreign warships and aircraft while operating throughout the region. All interactions with foreign military forces during the transit were consistent with international norms and did not impact the operation,” said Cdr. Hayley Sims, a Seventh Fleet spokesperson.

The Seventh Fleet, which is headquartered in Yokosuka, Japan, is responsible for missions that include asserting navigational and overflight rights in the Western Pacific. In the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait, these tend to feature U.S. warships like the Navy’s Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Chung-Hoon , which transited the strait in early January for the first time this year, following nine other operations in 2022 by difference vessels.

Open-source aircraft-monitoring websites have tracked P-8A operations in the strait in the past, and the U.S. publicly confirmed at least one such transit in June last year. However, public announcements of this nature remain rare.

“While U.S. transits through the Taiwan Strait demonstrate our commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific, we also consider them routine transits/flights through international waters and airspace. We issue statements to provide accurate and timely information in response to increased interest,” Sims said.

The contest between Chinese and American forces concerns the U.S.’s ability to operate freely in Asia, as Beijing aims to grows its military into the region’s dominant power in the coming decades. But Washington is also alarmed by China’s long-term designs on Taiwan.

The implications of a cross-strait conflict could have devastating consequences for the global economy that far outweigh the destabilizing effects of Russia’s war in Ukraine, according to officials including Secretary of State Antony Blinken .

“One of the reasons that the world is so concerned about a crisis across the Taiwan Strait is because this is not an internal matter, as China would have it, based on its sovereignty. It’s a matter of concern to quite literally the entire world,” America’s top diplomat told The Atlantic ‘s Jeffrey Goldberg last week.

“50 percent of the commercial container traffic goes through that strait every day. A big majority of the semiconductors that the world needs for everything from our smartphones, our dishwashers, to our automobiles are produced on Taiwan,” he said.

“If there were a crisis in Taiwan as a result of China’s aggression in some fashion, that would have I think disastrous consequences for the world economy and for countries around the world. And that’s a message too that Beijing is hearing increasingly,” he said.

Brazil has allowed two Iranian warships to dock in their country. The visit on Sunday comes after a diplomatic delay and in spite of US pressure.

Iranian warships IRIS Makran and IRIS Dena have docked in Rio de Janeiro, as confirmed by the deputy chief of Brazil’s Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Carlos Eduardo Horta Arentz, in the state’s Official Gazette (Diário Oficial da União). The ships will remain there until March 4, when they depart further for the Panama Canal that divides the American continent.

The decision comes in spite of US Ambassador to Brazil Elizabeth Bagley’s warning Brasilia not to allow the Iranian Navy access to the South American port. She said at a press conference earlier this month that these ships “facilitated illegal trade and terrorist activities.” She added that, to date, no other countries have provided a port for these vessels.

The Iranian warships started their journey in January, departing from the south of Iran to circumnavigate the world. Initially, the plan was for Brazil to receive the ships in January, but it was delayed in order to appease the US.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, commonly referred to simply as Lula, was planning his trip to Washington to meet with US President Joe Biden and delayed the ships’ entry into his country’s port. After the two leaders met earlier this month and, as their joint statement says, “reaffirmed the vital and enduring nature of the US-Brazil relationship,” Tehran’s ships are once again welcome in Rio.

Lula has a history of relations with the Islamic Republic, welcoming then-president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Brasilia in 2009 to try and broker a nuclear deal between Washington and Tehran.

Russian oil flows to Poland have been halted due to the stoppage of payment for deliveries, Russia’s state-owned pipeline transport company Transneft announced on Monday.

Transneft, which operates Russia’s section of the Druzhba pipeline, explained that it transfers oil to other countries in line with the export schedule approved by the Russian Ministry of Energy, as well as routing orders processed by freight forwarders.

“Transneft is not currently transporting oil to Poland,” the company’s spokesman Igor Demin said. He noted that pumping to Polish refineries was scheduled for “the third ten-day interval” of February. However, “routing orders with confirmed resource and transit payments were not processed,” he explained, adding that “operational changes were made to the schedule, excluding supplies for Polish consumers.”

On Saturday, Poland’s largest oil company PKN Orlen said it had stopped receiving oil via the Druzhba pipeline from Russia. While the EU banned seaborne oil imports from the country last December, pipeline deliveries were exempted from the sanctions package in order to secure supplies to landlocked members of the bloc.

Poland has been getting piped oil under a contract with Russian oil and gas company Tatneft after a previous supply agreement with oil major Rosneft expired.

According to Orlen’s CEO Daniel Obajtek, Russian oil currently accounts for 10% of Poland’s imports, after Warsaw slashed shipments from the sanctioned country. The current contract with Tatneft provides 200,000 tons of oil per month to Polish refineries and expires in December 2024.

The northern part of the Druzhba pipeline system feeds two refineries in eastern Germany as well as plants operated by Orlen in Poland. Warsaw has repeatedly pledged to replace Russian oil with crude from the US, the Middle East and other sources.

Oil shipments via the pipeline’s southern branch to Slovakia and the Czech Republic, where Orlen operates two refineries, remained unchanged.

King Charles will meet EU chief Ursula von der Leyen for tea at Windsor Castle, after she was due to meet Rishi Sunak to agree a Northern Ireland Brexit deal.

Buckingham Palace said the meeting had been arranged on the advice of the government.

Number 10 said it was “fundamentally” a decision for the King.

But there have been warnings against drawing the monarch into a contentious political dispute.

Conservative MP Jacob Rees-Mogg, a Brexiteer and former cabinet minister, said it was “constitutionally unwise to involve the King in a matter of immediate political controversy”.

Sammy Wilson, chief whip of the Democratic Unionist Party, said the meeting would risk “dragging the King into a hugely controversial political issue”.

But the prime minister’s official spokesman likened the meeting with Ms von der Leyen to the King’s other recent meetings with visiting international dignitaries such as Polish President Andrzej Duda or Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“It’s for the King to make those decisions,” said the Number 10 spokesman.

“The King is pleased to meet any world leader if they are visiting Britain and it is the government’s advice that he should do so,” said a palace spokesman.

At around 14:20 GMT, ahead of the meeting, a senior Government source told the BBC a new Brexit agreement for Northern Ireland had been reached.

Ukrainian media reports began claiming Sunday that a large explosion rocked Machulishchy airbase in Minsk Oblast in Belarus, with reports saying a Russian aircraft had been damaged. Eyewitness accounts suggested two explosions in the Sunday morning hours.

“According to preliminary reports, the traffic police stopped the cars in several places around the airbase and checked the trunks and ID of the drivers,” Ukrainska Pravda reported, also citing the presence of emergency vehicles on the scene. But now there appears further confirmation in AFP that a Russian military airplane was likely destroyed at the airfield.

Secret operatives reportedly used drones to carry out the attack, before sneaking back across the border and out of Belarus. Reuters is also as of Monday morning reporting the news.

Belarus’ anti-Lukashenko opposition is now claiming that it was a successful sabotage operation which targeted Russian aircraft. The information has been revealed by officials working under exiled Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya:

“Partisans… confirmed a successful special operation to blow up a rare Russian plane at the airfield in Machulishchy near Minsk,” tweeted Franak Viacorka, a close adviser of opposition figurehead Svetlana Tikhanovskaya.

“This is the most successful diversion since the beginning of 2022,” he added.

The two Belarusians who carried out the operation had used drones, he said, adding that they had already left the country and were safe.

Tikhanovskaya herself also weighed in, saying, “I am proud of all Belarusians who continue to resist the Russian hybrid occupation of Belarus & fight for the freedom of Ukraine.” She’s long carried out her opposition activity in exile from Lithuania and earlier Poland, having also recently been tried in absentia by Lukashenko’s court system.

She further claimed the aircraft was worth 330 million euros, with other opposition media sources identifying that it was an A-50 surveillance plane.

Ukraine along with its Western backers have long accused Belarus of aiding and abetting the Kremlin’s war efforts by allowing its territory to be used as a staging ground for Russian planes, drones, and troops. For this reason, major Russian assets parked in Belarus would indeed be likely targets of Ukrainian and Belarusian exiled opposition sabotage attacks. The A-50 in particular is considered a rare aircraft within the Russian arsenal, given its size and expense.

If this was indeed a successful sabotage operation to take out such a large, valuable Russian asset, it’s very likely the saboteurs had help from a NATO country’s intelligence agency, perhaps with US, UK, or Polish involvement. The U.S. Supreme Court is reportedly reconsidering hearing the Brunson v. Adams lawsuit, after previously dismissing it earlier this year. The lawsuit appears to be seeking to remove President Joe Biden, 80, from the White House and reinstate former President Donald Trump, 76, as President of the United States, as it claims that lawmakers violated their oaths of office by refusing to investigate the allegedly fraudulent 2020 general election which it claims was rigged in Biden’s favor.

What Is The Brunson v. Adams Case?
Plaintiff Raland Brunson claims that the defendants – which include almost 400 members of Congress, as well as Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and former Vice President Mike Pence – voted to certify the 2020 presidential election despite receiving a valid request from 154 members of Congress to investigate the unfounded claims of electoral fraud in six states.

The lawsuit claims that Brunson’s vote for Trump, which he cast in Utah back in 2020, was made invalid due to election fraud. The suit called for all 387 members of Congress who voted to certify Biden’s electoral votes to be removed from their role, along with Biden and Harris, and be prohibited from running for office again. Brunson is also reportedly seeking $2B tax-free in damages.

Brunson posted an update on Facebook following the court’s January 9th decision, writing: “The petition was denied. We will now make our next move. A petition for reconsideration. Hang in [there] everyone.”

Brunson Files Appeal Following SCOTUS’ Initial Decision
Brunson then filed an appeal on January 23rd, with new reports stating that the court now has to reconsider hearing the case; and according to an update on the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) website, the lawsuit was “distributed for conference” on Friday, February 17th.

In the January 23rd appeal, Brunson said the court should grant a rehearing because the case “represents a very powerful domestic covert operation that is so benign that it cannot been seen on how it has breached our national security, and how it is affecting the national security of both Canada and Mexico, and how it has circulated fears that we might soon see the destruction of property along with a large volume of bloodshed in our own streets.”

The shipment of Chinese weapons systems to
Russia begins, an event that will be a turning point not only for the Ukrainian war but also for Beijing’s relations with the US, the West and NATO.

Senior Chinese Liberation Army officials have
reportedly ordered the opening of the PLA`s largest weapons depot in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

The Chinese military base houses high-ranking
Russian military personnel. The Russians reportedly arrived in this particular province of China 8 days ago.

Chinese officials are bringing artillery systems out of storage as well as missile systems. According to the same information, these are large quantities of weapons.

“The reserve artillery systems are coming out of
storage, being inspected and being prepared for
transfer to Russian colleagues.

These are PLZ-05 self-propelled howitzers of 152
mm caliber, the analogue of the Soviet / Russian
2S19 “Msta-S”, as well as MLRS AR1A, the analogue of the 9K59 “Smerch” of 300 mm caliber,” Chinese sources say.

Let’s note that the concession of the specific weapon systems to the Russian Army has a logic. These systems are the same as the Russian ones, the Russians know about them, and Beijing can easily deny NATO and the US their concession.
