BUENOS AIRES – Argentina is battling a record outbreak dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF). At least more than 40 people have died and infected more than 60,000, mainly in the northwestern region of the country.
This infection is spread by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, and the last major outbreak to hit Argentina was in 2020.
Argentina’s Ministry of Health says cases of dengue fever are starting to increase.
Biologists irradiated thousands of male mosquitoes in the lab, which will be released later, in the hope that their offspring would not be able to live because of DNA damage.
“These mosquitoes, due to rising temperatures in our country and the world… are able to spread more. The population continues to move further south,” said biologist Marianela Garcia Alba, quoted by Reuters news agency. /2023).
“The goal is for mosquitoes exposed to radiation to become the dominant type, to suppress the spread of dengue,” he added.
The northwestern provinces of Salta, Tucumán and Jujuy, near Argentina’s borders with Chile and Bolivia, have recorded the highest number of deaths.
Symptoms of DHF include fever, headache, nausea and joint pain.
Argentina’s Ministry of Health has urged the public to increase mosquito-repellent measures, including mosquito nets on doors and windows, use of insect repellent and dispose of water containers which can become breeding grounds.
