The Taiwan Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced today of the first confirmed case of Japanese encephalitis this year in the country.

Zika virus

The Taiwan CDC announced yesterday that the first two confirmed cases of Zika virus infection imported from abroad were detected in the country this year.

The patients are a man and women (Case 1 and Case 2), family members, in their 30s in northern Taiwan. They traveled together to the Maldives from April 19th to 26th.

After returning to Taiwan, Case 1 went to the doctor successively due to symptoms such as fever, sore throat, rash, and bone and muscle pain. The hospital notified and tested and diagnosed Zika virus infection. Case 2 also developed symptoms on May 1 and was tested as a confirmed case. At present, the two cases have been discharged from the hospital, and none of the companions have symptoms; the local health unit has investigated and eliminated the breeding source of the cases, and provided health education to the cases.

Since 2016, a total of 28 cases of Zika virus infection have been confirmed in my country, all of which were imported from abroad. Most were infected in Southeast Asian countries, including 6 cases each in Vietnam and Thailand, 3 cases each in Myanmar and Malaysia, and 3 cases each in the Philippines and Maldives. 2 cases, 1 case each in Indonesia, Singapore, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, the United States (Miami, Florida) and Angola. In 2016, there were a total of 13 cases, and from 2017 to 2022, there were less than 5 cases each year; this year’s case is the first since 2021.
