Mosquitoes captured by scientists in Sarasota County, Florida have tested positive for malaria, CBS News reported on Thursday. Cases of the disease were recently discovered in Florida and Texas, two states where the US authorities authorized the release of genetically-modified mosquitoes.
Four locally-acquired cases of malaria were reported in Florida over the last two months, while one was reported in Texas. These five cases were the first five instances of the mosquito-borne illness being transmitted within the US since 2003.
In a statement to CBS News, Sarasota County Mosquito Management Services said that it found malaria in three mosquitoes collected in the same woodlot. These insects, and hundreds more suspected of carrying the parasite that causes malaria, have since been shipped to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for testing.
All mosquitoes tested in Texas so far have shown no signs of carrying malaria, a spokesperson for the Texas Department of State Health Services told CBS News.
Around 619,0000 people worldwide died from malaria in 2021, according to figures from the World Health Organization. The disease is spread by infected female anopheles mosquitoes, who transfer blood from infected humans to subsequent victims. Malaria can take weeks to become symptomatic, and causes fever, vomiting, chills, and other flu-like symptoms. Malaria is treatable, and rarely fatal in the developed world.
Three years prior to the outbreaks in Florida and Texas, the US Environmental Protection Agency authorized the release of genetically modified mosquitoes in both states, before expanding the project to California last year. Engineered by British biotech firm Oxitec, which receives funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the mosquitoes carry a protein which causes their female offspring to die off, increasing the proportion of non-biting males in the insect population over time.
Oxitec has experimented on anopheles mosquitoes, and on the rarer Aedes aegypti variant, which carry Zika, dengue, and yellow fever. The project was heavily criticized by Florida locals, and although there is currently no evidence linking the company to the latest outbreaks, a 2019 study found that Oxitec’s modifications actually bred stronger and more resilient mosquitoes. The company disputes this finding.
The Florida authorities viewed genetically modified bugs as a potential alternative to chemical insecticides, which can be harmful to human health and become ineffective over time as mosquitoes build up resistance.
In Sarasota County, the authorities are currently using trucks and helicopters to spray affected areas with insecticide in a bid to stamp out the malaria outbreak, local media reported.
The US State Department has approved the sale of up to $440 million worth of ammunition and military vehicle components to Taiwan, the Pentagon announced on Thursday. The approval is the latest in a series of similar moves by Washington, made amid heightened tensions with China.
Two separate arms deals were approved by the State Department, according to notices posted on the US Defense Cooperation Security Agency’s website.The first deal, valued at $332.2 million, will see Taiwan acquire 30mm autocannon ammunition, including high-explosive rounds. The contract will be fulfilled by Alliant Techsystems Operations and General Dynamics.
The second deal concerns $108 million in logistics support, and will see the US provide spare and repair parts for various military vehicles and weapons platforms.
Both sales, the Pentagon stated, will support Taiwan’s “continuing efforts to modernize its armed forces and to maintain a credible defensive capability.”
Congress now has a month to discuss these sales and request that they be blocked or modified. With most Democrats and Republicans supporting President Joe Biden’s hardline stance on China, this is unlikely to happen.
The announcement came three months after the State Department approved the sale of $619 million worth of missiles for Taiwan’s fleet of US-made F-16 fighter jets. Separately, Washington and Taipei are reportedly in talks about the possible supply of $500 million in fast-tracked military aid, which would not require approval and would be drawn from existing US stockpiles.
Taiwan’s defense ministry said on Friday that the sales would boost the island’s defenses against China’s “expanding threats of military and gray zone tactics,” referring to China’s probing of Taiwan’s air defenses with drones and other aircraft.
China has persistently argued that American arms sales embolden the island’s government, and violate the ‘One China’ principle, under which the US recognizes, but does not endorse, China’s sovereignty over Taiwan.
Tensions between the US and China have been running high since last year, when then House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made a high-profile visit to Taipei. President Biden later stated several times that he would use military force to fend off a hypothetical Chinese attack. Beijing responded by restricting diplomatic contact with Washington and launching military drills around Taiwan, and Biden further inflamed tensions earlier this month when he called Chinese President Xi Jinping a “dictator” immediately after a meeting of American and Chinese top diplomats.

More than 50 foreign mercenaries dead in Kharkiv – 20 injured
At about 3 am, a Geran-2 kamikaze drone struck a gathering place of Western mercenaries in the Kharkiv region.
Foreign mercenaries chose as a place of residence the notary office building in the village of Veliky Burluk, Kupyansky district.
As a result of a Russian drone strike, more than 50 soldiers were killed and at least 20 more were injured.
After the strike, local authorities urgently cordoned off the burning building, unauthorized people were not allowed inside, and the phones of citizens passing by were examined by SBU agents.
The corpses of the mercenaries were urgently taken to the Kupyansk morgue.

WASHINGTON, June 29 (Reuters) – The U.S. Federal Reserve announced on Thursday that 57 firms have been certified to utilize its “FedNow” instant payments system after it launches in late July.
The Fed did not provide a specific date for the launch, but 41 banks and 15 service providers, including large firms like JPMorgan Chase (JPM.N), Bank of New York Mellon (BK.N), US Bancorp (USB.N) and Wells Fargo (WFC.N), have completed formal testing and will be ready to provide instant payments after the new service is live.

Foodborne intestinal illnesses caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis appear to be spreading earlier this year than in the past, according to a report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Since April, 210 cases of cyclosporiasis, the illness caused when people consume food or water contaminated by this parasite, have been confirmed in 22 states, the CDC reported on June 22. So far, no deaths have been recorded, but 30 people have been hospitalized.
While cyclosporiasis illnesses can happen at any time of year, the number of cases starting in April is unusual. Cyclosporiasis cases typically start to increase in May and peak between June and July, the CDC said. “It is too soon to tell if this timing indicates a change in the seasonality of cyclosporiasis in the United States,” the CDC said.
Cyclospora Illnesses Linked to Imported Fresh Produce
No specific food sources have been identified as the cause of most of these illnesses, according to the CDC. One outbreak involving 20 cases in Georgia and Alabama has been linked to imported raw broccoli, but this outbreak appears to be over, and broccoli doesn’t currently appear to be a source of illnesses elsewhere in the country, the CDC said.
Multiple outbreaks of cyclosporiasis caused by different foods can be reported during the same year, according to the CDC. Over the years, cyclosporiasis outbreaks have been linked to various types of fresh produce, including basil, cilantro, lettuce, raspberries, and snow peas.
What Are the Symptoms of Cyclosporiasis?
Most people who consume food or water contaminated with the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis get sick within about a week of exposure, according to the CDC. Symptoms usually include watery diarrhea, with frequent, sometimes explosive, bowel movements. Other common symptoms can include loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps or pain, bloating, increased gas, nausea, vomiting, headache, fever, and fatigue.
Some people have no symptoms at all. Those who do get sick are often treated with antibiotics. People who have a compromised immune system have a higher risk of severe and prolonged illness and should take extra precautions to avoid exposure, says Bobbi Pritt, MD, a professor of laboratory medicine and pathology and the chair of clinical microbiology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
People become infected with Cyclospora parasites when they consume food or water that has been contaminated by human feces, Dr. Pritt says. In the United States, human feces doesn’t usually contaminate the food supply, and therefore, cyclosporiasis is not usually a local problem.
“Municipal drinking water in the U.S. is generally safe to drink, but travelers to cyclosporiasis-endemic areas should avoid drinking water or eating food that may have been contaminated with feces,” Pritt says.
In addition, fruits and vegetables grown in regions without adequate sanitation and clean water may become contaminated with Cyclospora.
“Produce that is imported into the United States — usually from Latin America — is the most common course of cyclosporiasis in the United States,” Pritt says. “Cases of cyclosporiasis can occur at any time in the United States, but outbreaks usually occur in the summer when large amounts of fresh produce, such as cilantro, raspberries, and lettuce are imported.”
How to Prevent Illness From Cyclospora Parasites
To avoid getting sick, “the best thing to do is to wash fresh produce thoroughly,” Pritt advises.
Wash hands with soap and water before and after preparing fresh fruits and veggies
Wash cutting boards, dishes, utensils, and countertops with soap and hot water between preparing raw meat, poultry, and seafood and preparation of any produce that won’t be cooked.
Refrigerate cut, peeled, or cooked fruits and vegetables as soon as possible, at most within two hours, and store separately from raw meat, poultry, or seafood.

According to a number of experts including the former chairman of Goldman Sachs, Jim O’Neill, BRICS could in time and under certain circumstances challenge the status of the US dollar as the global reserve currency.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has accused Ukraine of allowing foreign mercenaries and Western generals to use civilian infrastructure to fight against Russia, and has vowed to destroy these groups.
Speaking at an online briefing on Friday, Lavrov said that Russia has “not seen confirmation of a single fact of deliberate shelling of civilian targets by the Russian army.” He claimed, however, that the Ukrainian side has been“violating international humanitarian law and committing a war crime by allowing mercenaries, Western generals and instructors to use civilian objects to hold all sorts of meetings.”
“If we discover such gatherings, for example, as in Kramatorsk, we will destroy them, because these are people who have declared war on us,” Lavrov said, referring to Russia’s recent high-precision strike on a temporary brigade base in the Donbass city of Kramatorsk on Tuesday.
The Russian Defense Ministry had claimed that the base was hosting a staff meeting involving dozens of Ukrainian officers and foreign advisers, and reported that the attack resulted in the deaths of “two generals, up to 50 officers of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, as well as up to 20 foreign mercenaries and military advisers.”
Russian forces have continued to repel Ukrainian attacks on their defensive positions in Zaporozhye and Kherson Regions, as well as in Donbass, since Kiev launched its much-hyped counteroffensive earlier this month.
Ukraine has so far been unable to make any significant gains and has suffered numerous casualties, losing hundreds of servicemen and dozens of heavy equipment, including tanks and infantry fighting vehicles provided by Kiev’s Western backers, according to numerous media reports.

Warsaw is asking NATO to include it in the bloc’s Nuclear Sharing Program, Prime Minister Mateus Morawiecki told journalists in Brussels on Monday. The program allows the deployment of US nuclear bombs on the territory of other nations.
Morawiecki called Poland’s appeal a response to Moscow’s decision to station its tactical nuclear arms in neighboring Belarus. “Due to the fact that Russia intends to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, we are… appealing to… NATO to [allow us] take part in the Nuclear Sharing Program,” the prime minister said.
The final decision on the issue would rest with Washington, Morawiecki said, but added that Warsaw sought to “act quickly in this regard.” Poland “does not want to sit idly,” he explained, while accusing Russian President Vladimir Putin of increasing “all sorts of threats.”
Launched in 2009, the NATO Nuclear Sharing Program has seen US B-61 nuclear bombs deployed to various locations around Europe, including in Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Türkiye.
Some nations have appeared to regret allowing the deployments. In 2010, German lawmakers made a decision on the withdrawal of America’s nuclear weapons from Germany but the arms have remained in place. In April 2023, Sevim Dagdelen, the deputy head of the Left party in the Bundestag, demanded a US troop withdrawal from Germany, alongside America’s nuclear weapons.
Moscow and Minsk signed a treaty on Belarus hosting Russian tactical nuclear weapons in May. The atomic warheads will be mounted on Iskander-M missiles and fighter jets specifically modified for the purpose, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said at that time.
Moscow pointed to the NATO Nuclear Sharing Program as its own justification for the move. An estimated 150 American atomic bombs were deployed across several NATO nations on the European continent as of April 2022.

On a third-straight day of heavy haze in Chicago, an improvement in air quality meant it was merely “unhealthy” to venture outside, rather than “very unhealthy.”
According to MSN, The latest disruptions made it all the more clear: Record-setting, out-of-control Canadian wildfires will not be put out any time soon, meaning more Americans than ever face continuing threats of dangerously poor air quality this summer.
Put differently: The United States could be in for a summer of smoke. “The number of people that are exposed is unprecedented in the modern era,” said Michael Wara, an energy and climate policy expert at Stanford University.
Air quality alerts covered all or parts of 23 U.S. states Thursday, from Colorado to Vermont, Wisconsin to Georgia. And while residents of Western states have grown accustomed to adjusting their lives to wildfire smoke, Easterners are still adapting to the reality that sooty skies can be a repeated hazard.
