Scientists in China have begun digging a 10,000-meter (32,808 feet) hole into the Earth, the deepest ever attempted in the country. Digging down through 10 layers of rock, the team hopes to reach rocks from the Cretaceous Period, the layer known as the Cretaceous System, which dates back up to 145 million years.
According to iflscience, The project, which broke ground on Tuesday, could be used to identify mineral resources as well as help assess environmental risks like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The hole, while impressively deep, will not be the deepest human-made hole on Earth. That title goes to the Kola Superdeep Borehole, on the Kola Peninsula in northwestern Russia.
The project, which spanned from May 24, 1970, to just after the collapse of the Soviet Union, saw the deepest branch of the hole reach 11,034 meters (36,201 feet) below sea level.
The team found that the rocks deep below the Earth were a lot wetter than they were expecting. Before the borehole found it, scientists had thought the water would not permeate the rock so deeply.
They had also been expecting to find a layer of basalt beneath the continent’s granite, as this is what was found in the oceanic crust. Instead, they found that beneath the igneous granite was metamorphic granite. Since the continental crust was granite all the way down, this was evidence for plate tectonics, a theory that had only recently begun to be accepted when they began digging the borehole.
Digging into the Earth doesn’t always go so smoothly. An American team in the 1960s reached 183 meters (600 feet) beneath the seafloor, going through 13 meters (43 feet) of basalt in the uppermost layer of oceanic crust before the project was canceled due to mismanagement and financial troubles. With these problems aside, the task is still a huge undertaking.
Chinese president Xi Jinping named “deep Earth” as one of four strategic frontiers for the country’s scientific community. At the time, Yigang Xu at the Chinese Academy of Sciences said the new focus on geological exploration was mainly driven by the need for China to reduce reliance on imports of minerals, metals and oil and gas.
Xinjiang’s Tarim Basin contains some of China’s biggest and deepest oil fields, and Sinopec has developed other ultra-deep wells elsewhere in the region. This includes the Shunbei oil and gas field, where the company says it has drilled 49 wells deeper than 8000 metres.
According to New Scientist, The drilling project could also offer researchers insight into the unique geology of the Tarim Basin. The basin collects water drained from three mountain ranges, and is thought to have been formed during the closure of the Palaeo-Asian Ocean more than 200 million years ago.
“It looks very much like an industrial oil drilling project as opposed to a scientific drilling project,” says Edward Sobel at the University of Potsdam in Germany. “Research wells usually try very hard not to find oil and gas.”
Still, he says the drilling project could also offer researchers insight into the unique geology of the Tarim Basin if it includes collecting core samples and taking geophysical measurements.
Sobel says the basin itself is more than a billion years old, with stable bedrock overlaid by hundreds of millions of years of sediment. “You’ve got a pretty continuous pile of sediment from the Cambrian [period] on”, comparable to the strata visible in the Grand Canyon, he says.
Most museums and books portray lots of dinosaur scenes, separated by millions of years. But what if all these diverse environments existed at the same time? That’s what we’d expect to find if we look at the Bible’s history . . . and the world today!
Zebras grazing contentedly on the Serengeti plain, a jaguar lounging on an ombu tree, a herd of water buffalo wading across the Brahmaputra River. The more we learn about the world around us, the more we are struck by the bewildering variety of landscapes and living things, woven together into a singularly beautiful picture that points to the One who wove it.
As David looked around him, it is no wonder he was compelled to sing aloud, “The heavens declare the glory of God.” In fact, he said the whole of creation seems to be unceasingly shouting about God’s glory for everyone to hear (Psalm 19:1–6).
Before the Flood, Noah and the earth’s other inhabitants must have seen God’s glory, too. Seeing these wonders, Noah surely sang songs of praise to his Creator. But Noah’s world was lost under the waters of the worldwide Flood; and over time, those early landscapes and their inhabitants—including tyrannosaurs, sauropods, and stegosaurs—faded from memory.
Then, two centuries ago, a handful of curious fossil hunters began to unearth startling clues about a staggering variety of long-forgotten animals and plants that once populated the earth. These finds set off a mad quest to retell their stories, a furious hunt that has never died down.
Different Starting Points, Different Views
Three successive sets of Flood layers, in particular, captured the popular imagination: Triassic layers, Jurassic layers, and Cretaceous layers. Each seemed to preserve a unique array of plants and animals that represents a distinct ecosystem full of various ferns, non-flowering plants called gymnosperms, small mammals, dinosaurs, and flying reptiles.
Every layer was different. For instance, Cretaceous layers contain Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops, while Jurassic layers contain Allosaurus and Stegosaurus.
The same fossils can be interpreted as three different dinosaur communities living at the same time just before the Flood but at different locations.
Based on their faulty assumption that present-day slow processes have always been at work, early biologists interpreted the fossils in Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous rocks as a series of communities that lived during different eras, separated by long periods of time. They believed each community replaced a previous community that had gone extinct. Each new community spread over much of the world before it also went extinct, to be replaced by another community.
Modern creationists, on the other hand, accept the Bible’s straightforward record of history. God created every kind of living thing in six days—only a few thousand years ago—and later He destroyed the earth in a worldwide Flood. Based on these facts, the same fossils can be interpreted as three different dinosaur communities living at the same time just before the Flood but at different locations. These communities were buried in succession, as each was overrun by rising Flood waters.

Now there are many Christian scholars, pastors and teachers who hold the position that the only
reason God brought the Flood was because of the immorality and evil of the human race at that
time—and that it had nothing to do with the genetic corruption of species.
And yet if that is true then why does the text say that the reason was because “all flesh (man and animals) had corrupted their way on the earth” (v.12)?
Those that say the corruption had to do with moral corruption have to explain—how animals can act immorally?
Or is the text telling us that there was a concerted effort by the devil and his angels to use genetic manipulation to corrupt both man and animals on the face of the earth so that this world would be hopelessly corrupted (contaminated) and therefore irredeemable?
There are many ancient stories and legends from history of half-man and half-animal creatures that lived on the earth—most people consider them to be myths, but others believe they are rooted in fact.
It could be that this came about as a result of genetic manipulation as mankind opened doors more and more to the demonic in their cultures and the demons used willing women as hosts splicing their DNA with animal DNA and fertilizing their eggs to produce half-human, half animal creatures.
In the seventh chapter of the Book of Enoch it says that the fallen angels also ‘sinned’ against the animals as well as against people (did what God had forbidden).
In another non-inspired book, the book of Jasher, we read in chapter 4:18, “Then the sons of men
[began teaching] the mixture of animals of one species with the other, in order therewith to provoke the Lord”
God had said of His creation that every living thing would only produce after its kind.
But certain fallen angels, under the direction of Satan, came to the earth in an effort to keep the Messiah from being born by contaminating the human race with demon and animal seed through genetic engineering —a process geneticists call the “transgenic modification” of species.
And many people, like myself, believe that this practice eventually brought the judgment of God on everything the Lord had created that lived on the earth by destroying it in the Flood
