The Taiwan Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported today on the first monkeypox, or mpox case in a child in the country.
The child presented with symptoms fever, eye discomfort, rashes and blisters on the hands, feet and trunk which did not relieve several days later.
The case is a mild case and is currently being hospitalized. Since the previously diagnosed family member had daily contact with this case after the onset of the disease, it was determined to be a household infection.
The CDC stated that according to the results of the epidemic investigation by the health unit, none of the contacts currently have any relevant symptoms, and the case did not go to the kindergarten where the case was diagnosed. It is estimated that the risk of transmission in the kindergarten is low.
The health unit conducted health education and self-health monitoring for 21 days for the contacts of the case, including family members, kindergarten classmates, and related staff, and worked with the education unit to conduct prevention and control work such as cleaning the kindergarten environment and health education briefings. Evaluate for high-risk contacts who receive monkeypox post-exposure prophylaxis.
As of today, a total of 149 cases (137 local cases and 12 imported cases) have been confirmed in Taiwan.
