Dmitry Medvedev, Russia’s former president and now vice-chairman of Russia’s powerful national security council, said Tuesday night that increasing NATO military aid to Ukraine magnifies the threat of World War III.
Commenting on the results of the first day of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization meeting in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, where member states promised Kiev more weapons and financial aid, Mr Medvedev insisted that Western aid would not prevent achieving the goals set by Moscow when it launched what the Kremlin dubbed a “special military operation,” the war in Ukraine, on February 24, 2022.
“The completely deranged West could not agree on anything else (…) Actually, this is a dead end. World War III is getting closer ,” Mr. Medvedev said via the Telegram platform.
“What does all this mean for us? Everything is obvious. The special military operation will continue with the same objectives.”
Mr Medvedev, who touted himself as a liberal reformer when he was Russia’s president (2008-2012), has now turned into a hawk with harsh anti-Western rhetoric. Diplomats consider the views he expresses a reflection of how the Russian elite thinks. He also yesterday advocated the use of cluster munitions, this “inhumane weapon”, as he claimed that there is information that the forces of Kiev are already using such shells.
The US announced last week that it would send cluster munitions, a munition banned by many countries around the world, to Ukraine’s armed forces. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said his country’s armed forces would be forced to use “similar” weapons systems if such munitions were delivered to the Ukrainian army. Moscow and Kiev have accused each other of having already used such munitions in the war, which is now more than 500 days old.
