US health officials have raised concerns about Alpha-Gal Syndrome (AGS), a food allergy linked to tick bites. Many doctors remain unaware of this condition, which is often misdiagnosed due to its delayed symptoms. Occurring two to six hours after consuming meat or dairy, symptoms include nausea, vomiting, and hives, among other reactions. The link between these symptoms and tick bites can thus be challenging to establish.
A recent report from the CDC suggests that between 2017 and 2022, over 90,000 confirmed cases of AGS have been identified. However, considering the diagnostic difficulties, it is estimated that numbers could reach as high as 450,000 individuals affected since 2010. For those diagnosed with AGS, abstinence from red meat and dairy products is commonly advised. The CDC is calling for increased awareness among healthcare providers, many of whom lack confidence in diagnosing or managing AGS, emphasizing the importance of patient education on tick bite prevention measures.
