The ECOWAS President has ordered the joint general staff to immediately activate deployed troops with the aim of “restoring Constitutional order” in the Republic of Niger.
This decision was expected based on all the latest movements of the two sides and above all, yesterday’s clashes between the French and the Niger National Guard.

As soon as the ECOWAS order became known, Niger’s military authorities reportedly told senior US diplomats that they would kill Niger’s imprisoned President, Mohammed Bazoum, if any kind of military intervention against the country occurred.

ECOWAS Rapid Reaction Force activated
The Chairman of the ECOWAS Defense Committee, Omar Touray, following the meeting earlier today, ordered the Chief of Defense Staff Committee to immediately begin the Activation of the ECOWAS Standby Force as well as all its Military Components.
The ECOWAS-Standby Force is a Military Rapid Reaction Force consisting of 6,500 to 10,000 troops aimed at handling major terrorist attacks and coups in the West African region.
Force Command is located in both Nigeria and Senegal with foreign support coming from the United States and France.
The directive to activate and deploy the ECOWAS force will reportedly take “some time”, although some elements of the force are already in motion.
The Force was reported to have been put on “State of Alert” following the coup in Niger, but was only activated today.
The ECOWAS Representative called on the African Union to fully support the decisions taken on Niger.
ECOWAS has stressed that it will impose the closure of the border with Niger, strict travel bans and the freezing of assets of people who prevent the restoration of constitutional order in Niger
At the same time, it became known that the Chinese company China Gezhouaba Group Company announced the dismissal of workers and the suspension of its activities at the Kandadji dam operations, 180 km northwest of the capital Niamey in Niger.
Finally, the Chinese embassy in Niamey announced that Chinese people in the country should leave unless they have a specific reason to stay.
Apparently the Chinese are expecting a full-scale conflict.
Niger: The military formed a new government
A new government was formed by the country’s authorities in Niger by an executive order of the new strongman, General Abduraman Chiani, which was read out on state television overnight.
The government has 21 members and was announced on the day of the crucial meeting of West African states in Abuja, the capital of neighboring Nigeria.
It is headed by Prime Minister Ali Maaman Lamin Zen, who will have 20 ministers, among whom the ministers of defense and interior are generals of the National Council for the Salvation of the Fatherland (NSS).
