Romania’s foreign ministry summoned the country’s Russian charge d’affaires after new fragments of a drone similar to those used by the Russian military were found on Romanian soil, Agerpres news agency reported.
Romanian authorities on Saturday found new drone fragments, the second to crash in the NATO member country this week, as Moscow steps up its attacks on Ukrainian ports on the Danube, a few hundred meters from the Romanian border.
“The chargé d’affaires of the embassy of the Russian Federation in Bucharest was urgently summoned on Saturday to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at the level of deputy minister,” the ministry said in its announcement.
“Deputy Minister for Strategic Affairs Iulian Fota conveyed the protests of the Romanian side about the violation of Romanian airspace after the detection on our territory, near the border with Ukraine, of some fragments of a drone similar to those used by Russian forces in the attack them against Ukraine,” the statement added.
Romanian President Klaus Iohannis said the discovery of the drone fragments indicated an unacceptable violation of Romania’s airspace had been committed.
For his part, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg pointed out that the Russian strikes near the border are “destabilizing”, despite the fact that there is no evidence that Russia intended to hit Romania.
Since July, when Moscow pulled out of a Black Sea deal to export Ukrainian grain, Russian forces have frequently targeted Ukrainian ports on the Danube near the border with Romania, from where exports continue.
