The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) has warned residents about the risk of mosquito bites due to an increase in West Nile virus (WNV) cases. The department issued the alert after five cases of WNV were reported since August 1, 2023, which is more than the usual two or three cases at this time of the year. The affected individuals have all recovered. No more details have been shared due to privacy reasons.
Late summer and early autumn are peak times for mosquito-borne diseases like WNV in North Carolina. The NCDHHS reminds the public that mosquitoes can still spread the West Nile virus, even as the weather gets colder. Michael Doyle, State Public Health Entomologist, has urged residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites and for local governments to use integrated mosquito management methods.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), most people with WNV show no symptoms. But, around one in five may get a fever and other symptoms like headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash. Severe illnesses like encephalitis or meningitis may develop in about one in 150 infected people.
Besides WNV, North Carolina also records about 20 cases of La Crosse encephalitis each year, mainly in the western part of the state. One case has been reported in 2023. There’s also a small risk of eastern equine encephalitis in the eastern counties, but no cases have been reported this year.
The NCDHHS has suggested several precautions to prevent mosquito bites and diseases. These include using DEET-containing mosquito repellent, careful application of repellent to children, fixing window and door screens, closing unscreened doors, using air conditioning, and removing standing water from containers weekly. The department advises anyone who thinks they or a family member might have WNV to see a healthcare provider. Public health agencies continue to investigate and respond to mosquito-borne disease cases, educate the public, and support local mosquito management programs.
