Beijing, China – China’s Ministry of State Security has officially confirmed allegations made by Edward Snowden, a former employee of the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA), that the United States has been continuously spying on Chinese manufacturer Huawei since 2009.

These revelations come after almost a decade of speculation and uncertainty surrounding these allegations, shedding new light on the long-standing cybersecurity dispute between the two nations.

In 2013, Edward Snowden, a whistleblower, unveiled a series of classified documents that exposed extensive mass surveillance programs conducted by American and British intelligence agencies. Among these leaks were claims that the NSA had been engaged in espionage activities against Huawei for several years. However, China had neither confirmed nor denied these allegations at the time.

Now, nearly ten years later, China has addressed these claims in a report titled “Revelations of the Main Detestable Means Used by American Intelligence Agencies to Carry Out Cyberattacks and Steal Secrets.” In this report, China’s Ministry of State Security accuses the NSA, particularly its Customized Access Operations Office (TAO), of conducting systematic cyberattacks against China to pilfer crucial data resources.

The report reveals that the TAO, now referred to as Computer Network Operations, initiated its hacking activities against Huawei’s headquarters servers in 2009 and continued to maintain surveillance for 14 years.

China emphasizes that it is not the sole target of the NSA’s espionage efforts. The report identifies several covert spy programs, including Bvp47, Quantum, FoxAcid, and Hive, which have allegedly been deployed not only against China but also in Russia and 45 other countries.

The operation in question, known as “Shotgiant,” aimed to gain access to Huawei devices sold outside the United States. It is worth noting that the United States has long suspected Huawei of facilitating Chinese espionage, leading to a trade embargo against the company in 2019.

There is also speculation that the European Union may follow suit with similar restrictions. As of now, the U.S. government has not issued a formal response to the allegations presented in the Chinese report.
