Britain’s Ministry of Defense has admitted that hundreds of British army tanks and armored vehicles could contain asbestos, a potentially dangerous material banned in the UK.
Some of these tanks have probably been sent to Ukraine.
More than 2,000 pieces of equipment, including Challenger 2, infantry fighting vehicles and Bulldog personnel carriers, belonging to the British Armed Forces may have asbestos-containing materials (ACM), according to the country’s Ministry of Defence.
Asbestos is a group of naturally occurring fibrous silicate minerals that are resistant to fire and corrosion. It is also an excellent thermal and electrical insulator. However, when asbestos materials are destroyed, tiny fibers could become lodged in the lungs, leading to asbestosis – a scarring of the lung tissue – and mesothelioma, a type of cancer.
Since 1999, the import, supply and use of all asbestos has been effectively banned in the country. In 2005, the EU-wide asbestos ban was enacted.
Since then, the bloc has issued a plethora of directives on environmental pollution, chemical safety, worker protection and consumer products related to the use of hazardous asbestos.
