Chinese authorities raided the office of a U.S. firm in Beijing earlier this week and detained all five of its local staff members, according to media reports.
The Mintz Group, a New York-based due diligence firm, said Friday that its employees were detained without notice and its Beijing office was closed, The Wall Street Journal reported.
“Our top priority is the safety and well-being of our colleagues in China, where we have retained legal counsel to engage with the authorities and support our people and their families,” the company said in a statement, according to the Journal.
“Mintz Group hasn’t received any official legal notice regarding a case against the company and has requested that the authorities release its employees,” the company added. “We are ready to work with the Chinese authorities to resolve any misunderstanding that may have led to these events.”
The raid was reportedly conducted on Monday afternoon, Reuters reported. A spokeswoman for the Chinese foreign ministry said Friday she was not aware of the case, according to Reuters.
The raid on the U.S. firm comes as relations between Washington and Beijing remain tense, following the incursion of a Chinese spy balloon in U.S. airspace last month and U.S. allegations that China is considering providing Russia with lethal aid for its war in Ukraine.

The prime minister of Israel is coming to the defense of Christians in the wake of a proposed law that would send believers to prison merely for sharing Jesus’ message in the Jewish state according to a report from PNW.
“We will not advance any law against the Christian community,” Benjamin Netanyahu, affectionately known as “Bibi,” announced Wednesday on Twitter. Netanyahu has long been a great friend and ally of Christians all over the world.
He routinely speaks to Evangelical Christian audiences at conferences, hosts an annual “Christian Media Summit” in Jerusalem for Evangelical journalists, and loves to invite Christians from all over the world to come and tour the Land of Israel.
Netanyahu has also been a strong and unwavering defender of protecting the human rights of free speech, freedom of religion and freedom of conscience for all Israelis, including Christians.
What’s more, over the years Netanyahu and his center-right Likud party have consistently shot down any bills that would have threatened the rights of Christians in Israel, even though they don’t agree theologically with Christians about who Jesus is.
As WND reported Monday, legislation had been introduced by Knesset Members Moshe Gafni and Yaakov Asher, two ultra-Orthodox members of Netanyahu’s coalition government, seeking to toss people in prison for spreading the Good News of eternal life offered by the Son of God.
The proposal would make it illegal to share Christian messages in conversation in person, online, as well as in print or by email. Violators would be imprisoned for a year, with the punishment doubled to two years if believers are witnessing to someone under the age of 18. An English translation of the measure states: “Recently, the attempts of missionary groups, mainly Christians, to solicit conversion of religion have increased.
“At times these attempts do not involve monetary promises or material gains and are therefore not illegal according to the current law, but the many negative repercussions, including psychological damages, warrant the intervention of the legislature.
“This is particularly in light of the fact that most of the attempts to bring people to convert their religion target the weaker classes who, due to their social-economic standing, are more easily open to persuasion attempts such as these.
“Therefore, it is proposed that alongside the prohibition of giving favors as an incentive to convert religion, also prohibited will be the act of solicitation to convert religion, when it is done directly to a person.
“It is proposed to distinguish between a situation where the person being solicited is an adult – in which case the maximum penalty proposed is one-year imprisonment – and a situation where the person being solicited is a minor in which case the maximum penalty proposed is two years imprisonment.
“Also proposed is to make stricter the punishment for someone who holds a ceremony of religious conversion of a minor, and make it two years imprisonment, instead of 6 months.”

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea claimed Friday to have tested a nuclear-capable underwater drone designed to generate a gigantic “radioactive tsunami” that would destroy naval strike groups and ports. Analysts were skeptical that the device presents a major new threat, but the test underlines the North’s commitment to raising nuclear threats.
The test this week came as the United States reportedly planned to deploy aircraft carrier strike groups and other advanced assets to waters off the Korean Peninsula. Military tensions are at a high point as the pace of both North Korean weapons tests and U.S.-South Korea joint military exercises has accelerated in the past year in a cycle of tit-for-tat responses.
Pyongyang’s official Korean Central News Agency said the new weapon, which can be deployed from the coast or towed by surface ships, is built to “stealthily infiltrate into operational waters and make a super-scale radioactive tsunami through an underwater explosion” to destroy enemy naval strike groups and ports.
The report came hours before South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol pledged to make North Korea pay for its “reckless provocations” as he attended a remembrance service honoring 55 South Korean troops killed during major clashes with the North near their western sea border in past years.
The testing of the purported “nuclear underwater attack drone” was part of a three-day exercise that simulated nuclear attacks on unspecified South Korean targets, which also included cruise missile launches Wednesday.
KCNA said the North’s latest tests were aimed at alerting the United States and South Korea of a brewing “nuclear crisis” as they continue with their “intentional, persistent and provocative war drills.” It said the tests were supervised by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who vowed to make his rivals “plunge into despair.”
The U.S. and South Korea completed an 11-day exercise Thursday that included their biggest field training in years, and are preparing another round of joint naval drills that will reportedly involve a U.S. aircraft carrier.
Hours after the North Korean report, South Korea’s air force released details of a five-day joint aerial drill with the United States that began Monday and concluded Friday above waters off South Korea’s western coast, which included live-fire demonstrations of air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons.
The air force said the exercise, which involved various South Korean fighter jets and at least one U.S. A-10 attack plane, was aimed at verifying precision strike capabilities and reaffirming the credibility of Seoul’s “three-axis” strategy against North Korean nuclear threats — preemptively striking sources of attacks, intercepting incoming missiles and neutralizing the North’s leadership and key military facilities.
The North Korean drone is named “Haeil,” a Korean word meaning tidal waves or tsunamis. The North’s Rodong Sinmun newspaper published photos of Kim smiling next to a large, torpedo-shaped object at an unspecified indoor facility, but didn’t identify it.
Other photos published with the same article showed sea-surface tracks supposedly caused by the drone’s underwater trajectory and a pillar of water exploding up into the air, possibly caused by what state media described as an underwater detonation of a mock nuclear weapon carried by the drone.

A controversial bill submitted to the Romanian parliament this week has urged the government to drop its recognition of Ukraine’s borders by 2027 and “annex” territories where ethnic Romanians live.
The bill, introduced by right-wing lawmaker Diana Sosoaca, would repeal a provision in the 1997 treaty with Ukraine, which pledged respect for each other’s national borders. She described the document as “the biggest act of treason” in Romania’s modern history because it “recognized the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact,” according to a formal justification of the bill.
Sosoaca was referring to the non-aggression agreement between the USSR and Nazi Germany, sealed in August 1939, which included a classified portion delineating spheres of influence for Moscow and Berlin.
The pact was one of several such agreements signed by European nations with Adolf Hitler’s government, as they maneuvered diplomatically in the last days of the interwar period. Romania was a Nazi ally for a significant portion of World War II, before switching sides. It lost some of its territories in the post-war settlement, which were added to Soviet Ukraine and Soviet Moldova.
Sosoaca listed several lands, which she deems as historically Romanian and currently “abusively held by Ukraine,” from Northern Bukovina to Snake Island. The latter was part of a lengthy legal battle over maritime borders, which ended in 2009 with Kiev keeping sovereignty over the islet.
Romania would “annex” those territories under the bill. The legislator cited a need to protect ethnic Romanians living in Ukraine from Kiev’s discriminatory policies, and ensure that they can maintain their cultural identity.
After the bill was met with pushback in Romania, Sosoaca stressed that she did not want Bucharest to go to war with Kiev for a land grab. However, she added: “peace cannot be based on the forced ethnic assimilation of the Romanian minority, which is the practice of the Ukrainian state.”
The initiative was introduced in the upper chamber of the Romanian parliament on Monday, with Sosoaca’s SOS Party holding a presentation the next day. She used to be a member of a different political force, but was expelled from its parliamentary faction in 2021 for allegedly breaking with its political strategy, and is now technically independent.
Critics have described Sosoaca as “far right” and claimed that she has ties with Russia, based on her attempts to soften a diplomatic dispute a few years ago, and her calls for a neutral stance on the Ukrainian conflict. The Romanian government is a staunch supporter of Kiev.

MOSCOW, March 24. /TASS/. The deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, has warned that Ukraine’s attempt to retake Crimea would be reason enough for Russia to use any weapons, including those provided for by its nuclear doctrine.
“As far as some serious offensives involving an attempt to retake Crimea are concerned, it is absolutely clear that this will serve as a basis for the use of all means of protection, including those provided for by the basic doctrine of nuclear deterrence, when the use of any types of weapons against Russia poses a threat to the existence of the state as such,” Medvedev said in an interview with Russian media, including TASS, as well as uses of the VKontakte social media network. He explained that “an attempt to split off part of the state would be tantamount to an encroachment on the existence of the state itself.”
“Therefore, draw your own conclusions: there are obvious grounds for using any weapons. Absolutely any,” Medvedev warned. “I hope our ‘friends’ across the ocean realize this.”
At the same time, Medvedev believes that Ukraine’s statements about the “retaking” of Crimea were mostly propaganda.
“All sorts of statements about retaking Crimea or something else… You see, this is propaganda and it should be treated as such. You always see it in times of war,” he explained.

MOSCOW, March 24. /TASS/. No country is currently protected from “hostile raids” by the United States and its allies, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an article for the Razvedchik (Intelligence Officer) magazine on Friday.
“In general, nobody today is safe from hostile `raids’ by the Americans and their NATO allies,” he opined, saying that “apart from Russia, numerous countries are currently being threatened and blackmailed.”
According to Russia’s top diplomat, “the situation in and around Ukraine is but a manifestation of a large-scale collision involving attempts by a small group of Western countries seeking world domination and a reversal of the intrinsic emergence of a multipolar architecture.”
“They have set a strategic task of comprehensively deterring China, as part of the so-called Indo-Pacific strategies, too,” Lavrov said. He slammed what he said was the West’s vicious interference in the internal affairs of sovereign nations, including fraternal Belarus, and condemned the years-long economic blockade of Cuba.
“While acting in the worst colonial traditions, the Americans and their backers are trying to divide the world into `democracies’ and `authoritarian regimes’,” the Russian foreign minister noted. He also castigated the EU’s diplomacy chief Josep Borrell for his “racist” statement about Europe being a garden and the rest of the world a jungle.

American forces said they retaliated soon after with “precision airstrikes” in Syria targeting facilities used by groups affiliated with Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, with activist groups saying they killed at least four people.
The attack and the U.S. response threaten to upend recent efforts to deescalate tensions across the wider Middle East, whose rival powers have made steps toward détente in recent days after years of turmoil.
U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a statement that the American intelligence community had determined the drone was of Iranian origin, but offered no other immediate evidence to support the claim.
“The airstrikes were conducted in response to today’s attack as well as a series of recent attacks against coalition forces in Syria” by groups affiliated with the Revolutionary Guard, Austin said.
Iran relies on a network of proxy forces through the Mideast to counter the U.S. and Israel, its arch regional enemy.
