US warns Ukraine may have to negotiate for territory

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has suggested that Ukraine may have to enter into talks with Russia before it can resolve questions regarding its borders, but insisted such decisions must be left to Kiev.

During a congressional hearing on Thursday, America’s top diplomat was asked whether the White House supported Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky in his vows to retake the Crimean Peninsula by force, offering only an indirect answer.

“I think there’s going to be territory in Ukraine that the Ukrainians are determined to fight for on the ground; there may be territory that they decide that they’ll have to try to get back in other ways,” Blinken said, apparently referring to diplomatic efforts.

However, he went on to argue that “these have to be Ukrainian decisions about what they want their future to be and how that lands in terms of the sovereignty, the territorial integrity, the independence of the country,” but added that Washington would like to avoid a situation which “simply invites the Russians to reset, rearm and then re-attack” following any potential negotiations.

The question to Blinken was posed by Republican Rep. Chris Stewart, who voiced concerns that the United States would be “asking for a world of hurt” if it attempted to ensure “no Russian presence at all in Crimea,” as has been repeatedly proposed by Zelensky.

The region has been part of Russia since 2014, when its majority Russian-speaking residents voted to reunify with Moscow soon after Ukraine’s Euromaidan coup. It was historically part of Russia since 1783, and was only transferred to Kiev’s administrative control by Soviet authorities in 1954.

Crimea has played a role in the current conflict in Ukraine, serving as a staging area for Russian forces. Earlier this week, Russian naval vessels in the area came under drone attack which was repelled by air defenses, Sevastopol Governor Mikhail Razvozhayev claimed. The city has hosted the main base for Moscow’s Black Sea fleet since its founding in 1783.

While US officials have appeared to back Zelensky’s previous vows to seize the peninsula and have largely eschewed any diplomacy with Russia, Blinken’s comments on Thursday could indicate a softening of that stance. Moscow, however, has stated that Crimea will not be a part of any future negotiations, insisting that the region would remain under its control for good

Denmark invites Nord Stream operator to help salvage mystery object

Danish authorities will permit the Russian-owned operator of the sabotaged Nord Stream 2 pipeline to take part in the salvaging of a mystery object discovered in Denmark’s territorial waters. Danish warships were recently spotted in the area close to the damaged pipeline.

Copenhagen is seeking to clarify the nature of the object, which the Danish Energy Agency will endeavor to do with assistance from the military, according to a statement on Thursday. Nord Stream 2 AG – whose parent company is Russian energy giant Gazprom – has been invited to participate “in that context,” the statement added.

Earlier this week, the Danish press reported the sighting of three military vessels, including a ship used by military divers, near the pipeline to the east of the island of Bornholm. Both Nord Stream pipelines were damaged by powerful explosions in two separate areas near the island last September. The Berlingske newspaper, which was the first to report the Danish Navy’s activities, said the military had confirmed its presence in the area, but declined to elaborate.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Rasmussen revealed last week that the government could corroborate Russian reports about the discovery of an unknown object near Nord Stream 2. Gazprom provided Danish authorities with photographs that it said had been found during a survey of the damaged energy route.

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the object had been found around 30km from where the pipeline was breached, and suggested that it could be some sort of antenna used in the sabotage to remotely trigger the charges.

Putin said Russia sought to investigate further, either on its own or with Denmark and a group of international experts. Rasmussen said Copenhagen would not allow Russia access to the site.

The Danish Energy Agency shared an image of the mystery object and described it as cylindrical in shape, measuring 40cm tall and 10cm in diameter. It suggested it could be a maritime smoke buoy, a signaling device used to help locate people in distress.

Moscow considers the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines, which were built to deliver Russian natural gas directly to Germany under the Baltic Sea, to be an act of terrorism. Putin stated that only a “state-level actor” could have pulled off the sabotage, considering the complexity of the mission.

Bitcoin has ‘no future’ – Russian finance official

The cryptocurrency market is extremely unpredictable and cannot be viewed as an alternative to traditional financial services at a time of global uncertainty, according to the head of the Russian State Duma Financial Market Committee.

Anatoly Aksakov told the Parliamentary Newspaper on Wednesday that for Russians it is better to invest in the country’s digital financial assets (DFAs). The issuance of DFAs will be accelerated this year, the lawmaker noted.

“I am rather wary of bitcoins. The price of the crypto has now risen again due to instability on the American financial market amid concerns of a possible crisis. Of course, when such signs occur, investors are looking for alternative assets where they can invest money. Obviously, bitcoin seems attractive to them,” he argued.

Aksakov, however, stressed that the price of bitcoin is highly volatile, with investors risking major losses.

“The cryptocurrency market today is extremely unpredictable, and, in my opinion, bitcoin has no future. Therefore, I would not advise investing in it, but would keep money in Russian digital assets that are starting to appear on the market. This year, we expect a serious promotion of the issuance of digital assets, secured, among other things, by natural resources and the potential of companies,” he explained.

DFAs, like cryptocurrencies, are based on blockchain technology. However, unlike the crypto, operations with them are centrally managed. In Russia, DFA issuance is regulated by the Central Bank, with companies required to register as information system operators.

A total of 2 billion rubles (over $26 million) worth of DFAs have been issued in Russia in the past year, according to the general director of the tokenization service Atomyze, Ekaterina Frolovicheva. The law on DFAs, regulating their issuance and use in Russia, took effect in January 2021.

Americans will see Northern Lights Friday — and perhaps sooner

The northern lights may be traveling south and could be seen across the mainland US from the West to East Coasts Thursday and Friday.

Not only that, but this is one of the most ideal times to gander at the powerful color spectrum due to the change of seasons, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

“Due to subtleties in the way the solar wind interacts with Earth’s magnetosphere, there is a tendency toward larger geomagnetic storms, and thus better auroras, to occur near the equinoxes.”

NOAA charts show that the lights may be seen as far west as Washington state, as far south as Iowa and northern Illinois, and as far east as Maine Thursday night. The Southern Tier, Western New York and upstate have the best chances within the Empire State of catching a glimpse as well.

The lights could still be visible in the US on Friday, but only to northern regions like Montana, the tip of the midwest, Maine and the New York-Canadian border.

This particular vibrant display is all thanks to a massive gape in the sun — known scientifically as a coronal hole — which will be bringing an electromagnetic storm of solar winds to the Earth.

“When the high-speed [solar] wind reaches Earth, the particles and the magnetic field it carries will interact with Earth’s magnetic field, effectively rattling it or like ringing a bell,” Alex Young, the associate director for science at NASA Goddard’s Heliophysics Science Division, told Insider.

“The current coronal hole, the big one right now, is about 300,000 to 400,000 kilometers across …. That is about 20 to 30 Earths lined up back-to-back.”

Unlike a coronal mass ejection — which per the US Naval Institute “can have effects similar to a man-made [electromagnetic pulse]” — the biggest byproduct of the sun’s current hole is mainly the awe-inspiring sky lights rather than a doomsday blackout.

On the Kp Index — a 0 to 9 measure used to determine geomagnetic activity — Thursday night’s anticipated show was listed at 6, or “moderate” as of Thursday morning, and Friday is at a “minor” 4, per NOAA.

Readings from the past 24 hours show current space weather reached a “strong” 7 on the scale.

If it were to reach 8, there is risk for “possible widespread voltage control problems” and at a 9 “some grid systems may experience complete collapse or blackouts,” according to the agency.

For those looking to chase the lights, NOAA says that the “best” time to view “is usually within an hour or two of midnight (between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.).”

“These hours of active aurora expand toward evening and morning as the level of geomagnetic activity increases. There may be aurora in the evening and morning but it is usually not as active and therefore, not as visually appealing.”

March 21 (Reuters) – UBS (UBSG.S) is set to enter talks with Michael Klein to terminate a deal that would have seen the Wall Street dealmaker take control of much of Credit Suisse’s (CSGN.S) investment bank, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday.

UBS on Sunday agreed to buy rival Swiss bank Credit Suisse for 3 billion Swiss francs ($3.23 billion) in stock and agreed to assume up to 5 billion francs ($5.4 billion) in losses, in a shotgun merger engineered by Swiss authorities to avoid more market-shaking turmoil in global banking.

Klein, a veteran dealmaker, was merging his eponymous advisory boutique into Credit Suisse’s investment banking operations to create CS First Boston as a standalone business which he would have led from New York.

UBS has now assigned a legal team to examine how to void the contract Credit Suisse signed with Klein in the cheapest way possible, according to the FT report, which cited people with direct knowledge of the matter.

“We assume he (Klein) is cherry picking. The deal was done when the selling bank had a gun held to its head and we are no longer in that position,” a person close to UBS said, according to the report.

UBS and Credit Suisse declined to comment, while Klein could not be immediately reached for comment.

Pentagon begins redeployment to deter Russia and China – WSJ

The US will send decades-old A-10 attack planes to the Middle East, replacing more advanced aircraft currently stationed in the region, which it instead intends to deploy in Europe and the Pacific, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.

The redeployment, which is expected in April, will mean that the US will reserve more sophisticated aircraft to counter perceived threats from Russia and China. The older A-10 planes are considered by the Pentagon as sufficient to protect US interests in the Middle East.

“The imperative is to get the most suitable aircraft to the Pacific for the higher threat challenges,” the WSJ quoted retired US Air Force major general Larry Stutzriem as saying. The US and some of its allies have expressed concern at possible Chinese military expansionism in the Pacific region.

Washington views China as its “pacing threat,” per National Defense Review documents released by the Pentagon last year – effectively meaning that the US sees the Asian nation as a rival to its “interests and values,” according to US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.

American troops have maintained links with some Iraqi and Syrian partners in the region as it fends off challenges from Islamic State militants – killing around 700 last year alone, according to US military data.

A-10 attack planes, which are some 40 years old, are not considered to be sufficient to deal with China’s advanced military technology, but retain utility against ground forces or militia groups in the Middle East, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Jupiter, Mercury, Venus, Uranus, and Mars are set to align in an arc formation on the nights of March 25 through 30, alongside the Moon. Jupiter may sink into the sunset and get lost in sunlight after the 28th, though, so aim to see this relatively rare cosmic event by then. If you want to spot all five planets in one night, timing, dark skies, and a clear view of the horizon are key.

According to Science Alert, You can probably see some of these planets from the city. Venus will be the easiest to spot with the naked eye, because it’s the third-brightest object in the sky, after the Sun and Moon.

However, some of the other planets, like Uranus and Mercury, may be harder to see. Give yourself the best odds by getting far from city lights, to a place with dark skies, before sunset. Make sure to check the weather and plan for a cloudless evening.

Russia lifts veil on gold holdings (US Metals verification coming soon)

Russia’s gold reserves jumped by 1 million ounces over the last year to 74.9 million ounces as of March 1, according to a report by the country’s central bank.

The Bank of Russia had stopped disclosing the volume of gold in international reserves in the wake of Western sanctions. The last time it reported an amount was in February 2022, when it said that total gold holdings were 73.9 million ounces.

The regulator’s report on Wednesday showed that gold reserves were worth $135.6 billion as of March 2023. The country’s total holdings of foreign exchange and gold reportedly declined to $574 billion from $617 billion year-over-year.

Analysis of central bank data by RIA Novosti shows that the share of gold in Russia’s international reserves increased over the past year to 23.6%, while the share of foreign currency decreased to 71.5%.

Foreign currency is traditionally the basis of reserves, but over the past year its volume in assets has decreased by 8.7% to $410.65 billion.

Roughly half of Russia’s forex reserves were frozen by Western central banks in early March 2022 as part of sanctions over the Ukraine conflict. The remaining holdings consist of gold and foreign currency kept within the country, as well as Chinese yuan assets.

Russia’s forex reserves had reached a historical maximum of $643.2 billion shortly before the conflict with Ukraine broke out in February of last year.

Moscow has repeatedly called the freezing of its assets “theft” and warned that it contravenes international law. According to the Kremlin, the idea of international reserves has been discredited by the use of the US dollar as a weapon in the sanctions war against Russia.
