The World Health Organization said Monday that eating processed meat such as sausages and ham causes cancer, while unprocessed red meat may also be carcinogenic.

The WHO’s cancer research unit now classifies processed meat as “carcinogenic to humans” based on evidence from hundreds of studies, and linked it specifically to colon, or colorectal, cancer.

The report outlined that simply eating 50 grams of processed meat each day — the equivalent of two slices of ham — can increase the risk of such cancer by 18%. However, the authors say the risks are relatively small to begin with.

The organization defines processed meat as any type of meat that is salted, cured or smoked to enhance its flavor or preserve it. Processed meat generally contains pork or beef, but may also contain poultry.

The WHO now classifies processed meat in the same category as smoking and asbestos, based on its certainty of a link with cancer, but stressed that did not mean they were equally dangerous.

Unprocessed red meat such as steak and lamb shanks is classified as “probably carcinogenic.”(money.cnn.com)

Burger and the Crunchy French Toast! I didn’t try anything else on the breakfast, or lunch menu but my team said all of their meals were pretty good.

Before I get into this adventure I need to address the WHO for making this extremely harsh statement about red meat.

Now I think we all know that red meat is not the best option on the food menu when it relates to the body. Too much of it can raise cholesterol, give you high blood pressure and now confirmed from the WHO can  also cause cancer.

I learned awhile back that Sodium Nitrate which is found in just about every frozen or refrigerated item is one of the ingredients that causes cancer.

There are also other things that scientists say that cause cancer; that is if you get too much burnt layers on your toast, bagels or even barbecuing your meat can cause cancer.

Asbestos, mold in your house, drinking too much wine, beer or alcohol and many other things can cause cancer.

Moderation is key in everything, and the key to good health is making sure you have a diet that includes colorful cancer fighting veggies, (the more colorful the better), fiber to prevent diabetes to control your insulin flow and also proteins of course with exercise.

I am not the best in my eating plan but I try to follow this model above. I also make sure to eat things I want as well, like a burger, pizza, spaghetti, etc.

Life just ain’t worth living to me without it. So do your best to be healthy but enjoy life as well!

Ok.. Enough with that.

The Austrian-born Bernays was the nephew of Sigmund Freud, and was quite good at using psychology to get people to buy a product or an idea. He was the guy who was hired by the Aluminum Company of America to use the American Dental Association to convince people that water flouridation was safe and healthy to the public. His campaign for Dixie Cups scared people into thinking the glasses they were drinking out of were unsanitary, and could be replaced by disposable cups. Bernays was hired by President Coolidge to help run his re-election campaign in 1924, and encouraged Coolidge to invite the country’s leading vaudevillians to the White House for a meet-and-greet over pancakes. This was one of the first known political pancake breakfasts that are now so popular among presidents and council members alike.

In the 1920s, Bernays was approached by the Beech-Nut Packing Company – producers of everything from pork products to the nostalgic Beech-Nut bubble gum. Beech-Nut wanted to increase consumer demand for bacon. Bernays turned to his agency’s internal doctor and asked him whether a heavier breakfast might be more beneficial for the American public. Knowing which way his bread was buttered, the doctor confirmed Bernays suspicion and wrote to five thousand of his doctors friends asking them to confirm it as well. This ‘study’ of doctors encouraging the American public to eat a heavier breakfast – namely ‘Bacon and Eggs’ – was published in major newspapers and magazines of the time to great success. Beech-Nut’s profits rose sharply thanks to Bernays and his team of medical professionals.(americantable.org)

Did you know….

Cobb salad was created at the Brown Derby Restaurant in Hollywood.

As with many “how this began stories” We don’t know how much is actual fact, but here is the official story from the Brown Derby themselves.

“One night in 1937, Bob Cobb, then owner of The Brown Derby, prowled hungrily in his restaurant’s kitchen for a snack. Opening the huge refrigerator, he pulled out this and that: a head of lettuce, an avocado, some romaine, watercress, tomatoes, some cold breast of chicken, a hard-boiled egg, chives, cheese and some old-fashioned French dressing. He started chopping. Added some crisp bacon — swiped from a busy chef.

“The Cobb salad was born. It was so good, Sid Grauman (Grauman’s Chinese Theatre), who was with Cobb that midnight, asked the next day for a ‘Cobb Salad.’ It was so good that it was put on the menu.(kitchenproject.com)

A Tribute to the Militia of the Past and Today; Wishing you a Memorable Memorial Day!

Live Action Quick Tips

Did you know….

As opposed to Veterans Day, which honors living veterans, Memorial Day is a time to remember those who have died while in military service. The holiday originally started as Decoration Day, where the graves of soldiers were decorated with flowers and flags. Though President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, NY the official birthplace of Memorial Day the wake of the Civil War, dozens of towns continue to claim that they, in fact, were the originators of the holiday.

It’s ancestry is so hard to trace — particularly through to some of our current iterations — because the custom of decorating tombstones precedes organized holidays. What is certain is that on May 5, 1868 national commander General John Logan declared May 30 Decoration Day, “designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land.”

At the first ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, 5,000 people participated in decorating the graves of fallen soldiers from the Civil War. By the late 1800s, all the northern states recognized Decoration Day. It wasn’t until after World War I, when the holiday changed from recognizing Civil War soldiers to honoring all dead military, that the whole of the country participated on May 30 every year.(ww2.kqed.org)

First things first…

I would like to give tribute to all of the militia in the past, present and future who have died or that have given service to achieving the freedoms that we have here in America today! Without you we wouldn’t be able to live freely in speech as we do, to be able to have free interests like we do, or to be able to worship the One True Living God (Jesus Christ) without having the fear to be a martyr. Bottom line to be free to choose!

Jesus said” There is No Greater Love than someone who will die for a friend!”

And trust me; that sacrifice that our Father in Heaven made by giving us Jesus Christ to die for us was one of the most non selfish things anyone could ever have done for humanity! So I want to make sure that He is definitely included in this! Thank you Jesus!

I salute these people that died for us within the militia without knowing us which is a love that needs to be saluted! Thank you all for your great service to this country!

Now let’s talk celebration!!!

Live Action Quick Tips

Did you know….

A Muslim butcher opened recently in our neighborhood and they sell halal meat. We wondered, what exactly does “halal” mean?

Halal is an Arabic word that means “permissible.” In terms of food, it means food that is permissible according to Islamic law. For a meat to be certified “halal,” it cannot be a forbidden cut (such as meat from hindquarters) or animal (such as pork.)

The slaughter of a halal animal is called “zabihah” and there are certain guidelines to follow:

Allah’s (God’s) name must be pronounced during slaughter.
The instrument must be very sharp to ensure humane slaughter. The animal must be slit at the throat.
The animal must not be unconscious
The animal must be hung upside down and allowed to bleed dry. Eating blood is not halal.
These steps must be accomplished by a Muslim or the People of the Book (Christian or Jew.) Many observant Muslims find kosher meat acceptable.
The animal must have been fed a natural diet that did not contain animal by-products.(thekitchn.com)

Just talking about it makes me think this sandwich must have been created to be eaten by Greek Gods. Us normal beings on this land are not worthy for such a divine creation.

Live Action Quick Tips

Did you know….

The Acadians – Frenchmen who settled in “Acadie”, the wilds of Nova Scotia – were forcibly driven out of Canada in 1755 by the British and shipped off to regions as disparate as Massachusetts, the West Indies, and Uruguay. This exile was called Le Grande Derangement (“the great trouble”). After returning to France, one of the largest groups of exiles landed on the shores of South Louisiana. Over time, more waves of Acadians reunited with fellow refugees, and they became known as “Cajuns”.

Acadians were hunters, farmers, and fishermen well-versed in the art of living off the land. They were given land grants upriver from New Orleans and moved into the swamps, bayous, and prairies of Louisiana to start farms and ranches. Unlike the cosmopolitan Creole cuisine, which is largely thought of as more refined and seafood-centric, Cajun food leans toward the rustic and rural, featuring wild game, pork, beef, and cured and fresh sausages.(langloisnola.com)

Live Action Quick Tips

Did you know….

When groups of German immigrants began arriving in America during the 19th century, many earned their livelihood by opening restaurants in large cities like Chicago and New York. It wasn’t long before many of their menus featured an Americanized version of the Hamburg steak– beef that was minced or chopped and combined with garlic, onions, salt and pepper, then grilled or fried. In 1837, New York’s Delmonico’s restaurant offered a Hamburg steak on its first menu. At 10 cents it was the most expensive item, twice the cost of pork chops, veal cutlets and roast beef. A German restaurant at Philadelphia’s Centennial Exposition in 1876 served Hamburg steaks to thousands of customers. Afterwards the dish was in high demand, and could be found in non-German restaurants and in cookbooks like Mrs. Lincoln’s Boston Cook Book, published in 1884:

Hamburgh Steak. – Pound a slice of round steak enough to break the fibre. Fry two orthree onions, minced fine, in butter until slightly browned. Spread the onions over the meat, fold the ends of the meat together, and pound again, to keep the onions in the middle. Broil two or three minutes. Spread with butter, salt and pepper.”(toriavey.com)

These toppings are mayo, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, ketchup, mustard, relish, raw onion, jalapeño peppers, green peppers, A1 sauce, BBQ sauce and hot sauce.

We’re going with the bacon burger today and my favorite topping selection on my burger is what they call All The Way. That will give you mayo, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, ketchup, and mustard.

Did you know….

In 1840, the sandwich was introduced to America by Elizabeth Leslie (1787-1858). In her “Directions for Cookery”, she offers a recipe for ham sandwiches that she deemed them worthy to be a main dish. In the 1900’s, with the industrial revolution underway, bakeries began to sell pre-sliced bread. The American public jumped at the ease of making a sandwich. The sandwich as institution was born. Human beings, being adventurous, have developed the sandwich into both a quick and easy meal, and an art form. How long would it take for us to reconfigure the possibilities: we toast the bread or serve it plain; we pile high the sandwich with the maximum ingredients, or keep it simple with one or two.(inmamaskitchen.com)

Nothing better on warm sunny day than cold cuts delivered on a breaded souffle!

Something about cold cut sandwiches just makes me want to break dance!

Maybe because when I was a kid, my brothers and I would come home from school and my mom always made sure to have bread, mayonnaise, mustard, cold cut meats, sliced cheese and bacon as a means for us to have a snack before she got home from work.

We would create all kinds of different sandwiches. Sometimes a bologna sandwich, where I would put 2 slices of bologna in the microwave for 1 minute just to give it that crisp on the edges and bubbled up form.

Then I would put mayonnaise and mustard on the bread and dive right in! This is the 80’s generation classic! I can hear the Hip Hip Hooray’s for all of you reading this now!

Let’s keep going!!
