A new study finds a chemical formed when we digest a widely used sweetener is “genotoxic,” meaning it breaks up DNA. The chemical is also found in trace amounts in the sweetener itself, and the finding raises questions about how the sweetener may contribute to health problems.

At issue is sucralose, a widely used artificial sweetener sold under the trade name Splenda^®. Previous work by the same research team established that several fat-soluble compounds are produced in the gut after sucralose ingestion. One of these compounds is sucralose-6-acetate.

Our new work establishes that sucralose-6-acetate is genotoxic. We also found that trace amounts of sucralose-6-acetate can be found in off-the-shelf sucralose, even before it is consumed and metabolized.”

Susan Schiffman, corresponding author of the study and adjunct professor in the joint department of biomedical engineering at North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

“To put this in context, the European Food Safety Authority has a threshold of toxicological concern for all genotoxic substances of 0.15 micrograms per person per day,” Schiffman says. “Our work suggests that the trace amounts of sucralose-6-acetate in a single, daily sucralose-sweetened drink exceed that threshold. And that’s not even accounting for the amount of sucralose-6-acetate produced as metabolites after people consume sucralose.”

For the study, researchers conducted a series of in vitro experiments exposing human blood cells to sucralose-6-acetate and monitoring for markers of genotoxicity.

“In short, we found that sucralose-6-acetate is genotoxic, and that it effectively broke up DNA in cells that were exposed to the chemical,” Schiffman says.

The researchers also conducted in vitro tests that exposed human gut tissues to sucralose-6-acetate.

“Other studies have found that sucralose can adversely affect gut health, so we wanted to see what might be happening there,” Schiffman says. “When we exposed sucralose and sucralose-6-acetate to gut epithelial tissues – the tissue that lines your gut wall – we found that both chemicals cause ‘leaky gut.’ Basically, they make the wall of the gut more permeable. The chemicals damage the ‘tight junctions,’ or interfaces, where cells in the gut wall connect to each other.

“A leaky gut is problematic, because it means that things that would normally be flushed out of the body in feces are instead leaking out of the gut and being absorbed into the bloodstream.”

The researchers also looked at the genetic activity of the gut cells to see how they responded to the presence of sucralose-6-acetate.

“We found that gut cells exposed to sucralose-6-acetate had increased activity in genes related to oxidative stress, inflammation and carcinogenicity,” Schiffman says.

“This work raises a host of concerns about the potential health effects associated with sucralose and its metabolites. It’s time to revisit the safety and regulatory status of sucralose, because the evidence is mounting that it carries significant risks. If nothing else, I encourage people to avoid products containing sucralose. It’s something you should not be eating.”

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea has been elected to the executive board of the World Health Organization (WHO).

The North Korean Ministry of Public Health’s Dr. Jong Min Pak has been seated on the WHO’s executive board with a term set to last until 2026.

The communist state’s new position on the board allows them say in determining the organization’s agenda and policy prescriptions.

The decision sparked immediate criticism from the government of neighboring South Korea, which pointed to North Korea’s history of ignoring policies put forward by the WHO and its parent organization, the United Nations.

“It is questionable whether North Korea, which has continued to contravene [United Nations Security Council] resolutions and disregard the U.N.’s authority, meets the standards for a WHO executive board member, which should abide by international norms, pursued by the U.N., and contribute to enhancing global health,” the South Korean foreign and health ministries said of the decision.

Other representatives newly elected to the board include experts from Australia, Barbados, Cameroon, Qatar, Switzerland and and Ukraine.

The World Health Organization serves as a specialized agency of the United Nations, falling under the U.N.’s Sustainable Development Group.

The organization was created in 1948 in conjunction with the U.N.’s creation and is given a broad mandate as the international governing body monitoring public health risks and overseeing responses to emergencies.

Headquartered out of Geneva, the WHO has 194 member states and operates on an annual budget of about $2.1 billion.

Texas Rep. Chip Roy released a brief message on social media calling for the WHO to be defunded over the election.

“Not a single taxpayer cent should fund this Communist garbage #DefundWHO,” wrote Roy.

A rocket launched from North Korea early Wednesday morning put neighboring South Korea and Japan on high alert before ultimately ending in failure.

State media reported that the rocket carrying the satellite crashed into waters off the Korean Peninsula’s western coast after it lost thrust following the separation of its first and second stages. It said scientists were examining the cause of the failure.

Following the launch, officials in South Korea’s capital, Seoul, sent alerts over public speakers and smartphones for residents to prepare for evacuation, but there were no immediate reports of damages or disruption.

Kenyan president William Ruto has called upon his African counterparts to move away from use of the US dollar in local payments. He made the remarks on Monday in Nairobi, while addressing the African Private Sector Dialogue on the African Continental Free Trade Area.

“We are all struggling to make payments for goods and services from one country to another because of differences in currencies. And in the middle of all these, we are all subjected to a dollar environment,” Ruto said.

The president urged his counterparts on the continent to mobilize central and commercial banks to join the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS). Launched in January 2022, the PAPSS is a centralized payment and settlement network for intra-African trade in goods and services.

Dr. Tumi BB Senokoane, a professor at the University of South Africa, told RT that forming one currency for all of Africa is “not an impossible task.”

“The idea behind the de-dollarization of the currency… stems from the background that Africa wants to rely [on its] own currency in purchasing, exchanging of goods and also in creating reserves for Africa as a continent. The idea [is] to find one common currency for Africa in that regard, that will be used by the central banks in Africa,” Senokane said.

The Latvian parliament on Wednesday chose Edgars Rinkevics as the Baltic country’s next president, after incumbent Egils Levits chose not to run for a second term. Rinkevics will be the first openly homosexual head of an EU member state.

Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins announced that Rinkevics had emerged victorious after three rounds of voting. He secured 52 votes out of 100 members of the Seimas, according to media reports in Riga.

The 49-year-old civil servant has been Latvia’s foreign minister since 2011. He revealed his homosexuality in 2014, the first senior official to do so in the country of almost 1.9 million.

Rinkevics is technically the second European head of state to be openly gay. The distinction of being the first goes to Paolo Rondelli, who served as captain-regent of San Marino – an independent principality on the Italian peninsula – in 2022. San Marino is not an EU member, however, while Latvia joined the bloc in 2004.

The EU’s first openly gay elected head of government was Belgian Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo in 2011. Luxembourg’s Xavier Bettel, elected in 2013, is still in office. So is Ireland’s Leo Varadkar, first elected in 2017.

The bloc has declared affirmation of LGBT identity as one of its “fundamental values,” clashing with members such as Hungary and Poland over laws upholding traditional families. Latvia’s parliament has yet to vote on a bill that would approve civil unions between same-sex couples, according to Bloomberg.

Along with its Baltic neighbors Estonia and Lithuania, Latvia used to be part of the Russian Empire until 1918, and of the Soviet Union in 1940-41, and again between 1945 and 1991. The Baltic republics have insisted that the Soviet period amounted to illegal occupation, and have glorified those who collaborated with Nazi Germany as patriots, while banning celebrations of victory over the Third Reich and demolishing Red Army monuments and cemeteries.

More and more American families are going hungry and being forced to take such measures as watering down baby formula and skipping meals as rising grocery prices and cuts to public benefits push food insecurity to record levels, a new study has found.

The newly released survey by Propel, maker of a phone application that helps users manage their so-called “food stamp” benefits, found that a record-high 44% of respondents reported skipping meals in the past month. That total marked a 7% increase from the rate in April and showed that food insecurity among users of the app was at “unprecedented levels” for the second straight month.

Propel’s findings illustrate how Americans who rely on the federal government’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) are struggling to cope after 32 states began cutting benefits in March. The cuts affected more than 30 million people and came at a time when US grocery prices are about 20% higher than two years ago.

Nearly one in three survey respondents (32%) told Propel that they relied on family members or friends to give them food in the past month. Nearly half said they couldn’t afford the foods they wanted, and 54% reported that they were forced to eat less.

“We can’t afford to spend cash on food,” one app user told the firm. “Everything’s too expensive. We go to food banks, but they don’t supply enough of the essential things, such as milk, bread, eggs and oil, so we go without those things until SNAP comes.”

Rising costs for other essentials, such as energy, are contributing to the food insecurity crisis, Propel said. Over 43% of survey respondents have past-due utilities or other bills, and 26% are behind on their rent or mortgage payments. About 57% of app users believe their money on hand won’t last more than a day or two, up nearly 20% from a month ago. Evictions rose by 40% from April’s level, and 11% of respondents said their utility services had been shut off in the past month.

A new study by the Greater Boston Food Bank had similar findings, including the fact that one in three families reported that their children were going hungry or that they had skipped meals. Among Massachusetts households that rely on the food bank for assistance, 70% said they had been forced to choose between buying groceries or paying utility bills. More than six in ten said they had to choose between eating and paying for medical care. About 85% said they bought the “cheapest food available” to get by.

US inflation surged to a 40-year high last summer, largely on rising food and energy prices. President Joe Biden blamed the jumps in prices on Russia’s military offensive against Ukraine.

China faces increasingly difficult and complex national security challenges and must prepare for “worst-case” scenarios by increasing its capacity to deal with internal and external threats, President Xi Jinping has warned.

“We must be prepared for worst-case and extreme scenarios and be ready to withstand the major test of high winds, choppy waters and even dangerous storms,” state-run news agency Xinhua quoted Xi as saying on Tuesday in a meeting with China’s top security officials in Beijing. He added that more efforts were needed to modernize the nation’s security architecture and “get prepared for actual combat and dealing with practical problems.”

Xi made his comments to the National Security Commission amid increasing tensions with the US. Just this week, Beijing declined Washington’s request for a meeting between the two countries’ defense chiefs when both men attend a security conference in Singapore in June, citing the need for US officials to respect China’s sovereignty and security concerns.

China cut off defense and climate ties with Washington last August over alleged meddling by US officials in Taiwan. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning demanded on Wednesday that the US stop flying spy planes over the South China Sea, calling the flights “dangerous provocations.” Her statement came one day after the US Indo-Pacific Command accused a Chinese pilot of causing a near-collision by buzzing his fighter jet in front of an American reconnaissance plane in international airspace above the South China Sea.

The Pentagon has labeled China “the most consequential and systemic challenge” to US national security – an assessment that Beijing derided as an excuse to expand Washington’s nuclear arsenal and maintain its military hegemony.

Xi urged his security chiefs to build up “strategic self-confidence,” improve the coordination of their operations and utilize more advanced technology. He called for enhanced real-time monitoring of security threats, a better early warning system and improved handling of computer data and artificial intelligence (AI).

“The complexity and severity of national security problems faced by our country have increased dramatically,” Xi said.

US President Joe Biden’s administration has tried to stymie China’s development of advanced semiconductor chips, at least partly because of their importance in advancing AI technology. Those measures have included restrictions on exports of semiconductors and advanced chip-making equipment to China.

Last week, China banned purchases of products from Micron Technology, the largest US maker of computer memory chips, citing “significant security risks.” Some observers interpreted the move as retaliation for Washington’s efforts to contain China’s chipmaking industry. US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo responded by saying Washington “won’t tolerate” the Micron ban.

Stanford University professor Dr. Garry Nolan has claimed there is a “100%” possibility that alien lifeforms have visited Earth in the past and that they are still present on our planet to this day.

Speaking at a conference in Manhattan last week, Nolan – an immunologist and Nobel Prize nominee who claims to have worked for the CIA in the past – suggested that humans have likely even seen aliens before but simply didn’t notice anything different about them, similar to how South American tribes spotted Spanish ships for the first time.

“I think it’s an advanced form of intelligence that is using some kind of intermediaries,” Nolan said, noting that, “It’s not that they walk among us wearing a skin suit. You’re going to put something there that I think of as an intelligence test.”

Nolan emphasized, however, that he didn’t believe any alien life intended to harm humans. “I’m not worried about them coming and raiding us or taking our women and children. That’s not my concern,” he said, noting that what he is interested in is how humanity could benefit from alien technology found on Earth.

The researcher claims to have previously been commissioned by the CIA to use his immunology expertise to help “understand the medical harm that had come to some individuals, related to supposed interactions with an anomalous craft.” He has stated that the symptoms exhibited by the patients he examined were “basically identical to what’s now called ‘Havana syndrome’,” referring to the mysterious illness that was first reported in Cuba in 2016 and has afflicted a number of US officials and military personnel working abroad.

Nolan also claims to have been involved in CIA research programs analyzing materials allegedly found at UFO flyover sites and said that he had been in contact with several individuals who had worked or were currently working on secretive UFO ‘reverse engineering’ programs.

According to Nolan and lawyer Daniel Sheehan, the US congress spoke to as many as six whistleblowers last month who claimed to have worked on Roswell-style UFO crash retrieval and reverse engineering programs.

Last year, President Joe Biden signed a law which required the Pentagon to give high-ranking senators classified reports on any previously undisclosed programs relating to UFOs. Congress also passed a law which created whistleblower protection for anyone who had worked in such programs.

However, the head of the Pentagon’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) Sean Kirkpatrick testified in a Senate hearing last month that there was still no definitive evidence of extraterrestrial life.

LONDON, May 31. /TASS/. The recent remark by British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly who said Ukraine had the right to attack targets inside Russia may encourage Kiev to carry out more terrorist acts in Russia, the Russian embassy to the United Kingdom said in a comment on Wednesday.

“The hostile statements by Britain’s top `diplomat’ cannot be viewed as anything but an attempt to encourage the Kiev regime to carry out more attacks on civilian facilities and our civilians,” the embassy said. “Apparently, from their windows, the Foreign Office – or Estonia – sees residential blocks in Moscow as `legitimate military targets’,” the embassy lamented. “We assume that such statements should mean that Cleverly himself is ready to take responsibility for the damage and suffering caused to the Russians as well as for the extremely dangerous escalation of the conflict,” it added.

On Tuesday, Cleverly opined that “Ukraine has the legitimate right to defend itself” and to do so “beyond its borders to undermine Russia’s ability to project force into Ukraine itself.”

Ukrainian drones attacked Moscow and the Moscow Region on Tuesday morning, using eight unmanned aerial vehicles, according to the Russian Defense Ministry. Five of the drones were downed, and the other three were suppressed with electronic warfare systems.

Two people in Moscow sought medical assistance, however, no hospitalization was required. Several buildings sustained minor damage.

In the aftermath of a drone attack on residential buildings in Moscow, UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly has said that Ukraine has a right to “project force” beyond its borders. Among Ukraine’s Western backers, Britain has led the charge to arm Kiev with long-range weaponry.

Speaking to reporters in Estonia on Tuesday, Cleverly said that Ukraine has a “legitimate right to defend itself,” and can “project force beyond its borders to undermine Russia’s ability to project force into Ukraine itself.”

Striking “legitimate military targets” within Russia is a viable self-defense tactic for Kiev’s forces, Cleverly added.

None of the eight drones used in Tuesday morning’s attack on Moscow hit military targets. Three were suppressed by electronic warfare measures and deviated from their intended course before crashing, while five were shot down by Pantsir-S air defense systems outside the city, the Russian Ministry of Defense said, describing the drone raid as “a terrorist attack” by “the Kiev regime.”

Several residential buildings were damaged and two people suffered minor injuries in the attack.

In a separate incident on Tuesday morning, the Ukrainian military shelled a civilian shelter in Russia’s western Belgorod Region, leaving several people dead and injured, the region’s governor said in a statement.

The attacks came after Russia launched a heavy barrage of missiles and drones at Ukrainian airfields, ammunition dumps, and “decision-making centers” responsible for plotting similar terrorist actions, according to the Russian Defense Ministry. Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed on Tuesday that the headquarters of the Ukrainian military’s Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) was among the decision-making centers hit.

In Washington, the White House issued a more cautious response to the drone attack. “As a general matter, we do not support attacks inside of Russia,” a White House spokesperson said in a statement.

While the US has given the Ukrainian military more money than all other donors combined, President Joe Biden and his officials have repeatedly shot down Kiev’s requests for long-range weapons capable of striking deep within Russian territory. However, Britain has filled this role, announcing this month that it would arm Kiev with Storm Shadow cruise missiles – which can hit targets more than 250km away.

There are signs, however, that US policy may shift soon. Asked on Monday whether he would send long-range ATACMS missiles to Ukraine, Biden told reporters that the idea was “still in play.”
