Lasagna is believed to be one of the earliest types of pasta. These thin and wide noodles are most frequently layered in a dish with other savoury ingredients and baked to create a dish called – you guessed it – lasagna.
Several sources suggest the word lasagna may have come from the old Greek word laganon, which was used to describe a type flat cake or bread. That cake was not pasta, but when Ancient Romans learned about it and staring eating it they cut it into strips that could be layered and called it lagani. That food eventually transformed into a type of pasta and a dish called lasagna. The plural form of the word lasagna is lasagne. (thriftyfoods.com)
