Incoming ‘Cannibal CME’ From Solar Eruptions May Make Bright, Widespread Aurora Visible This Week (AR3078 – M-Flare)

On Monday, the day after a so-called ‘dark plasma eruption’ from the surface of the sun hurled high-energy particles in our direction via a coronal mass ejection (CME), a different exploding magnetic filament blasted another CME towards Earth.

The thing is, the latter blast looks to be moving faster than Sunday’s dark plasma projectile and may overtake it on the way, a phenomena that some space weather observers call a ‘cannibal CME.’

“In other words, the second CME might overtake and gobble up the first, creating a mish-mash of the two,” explains former NASA astronomer Dr. Tony Phillips, writing at Spaceweather.com “Cannibal CMEs contain tangled magnetic fields and compressed plasmas that sometimes spark strong geomagnetic storms.”
