Eight areas of England have been declared in a state of drought, and supermarkets are already giving away bottled water.
Millions of households are facing tough situations after the government announced that parts of southern, central and eastern England have officially been placed in a state of drought following a prolonged period of hot and dry weather.
Up to three bottles of water
Supermarkets are scrambling to clamp down on pre-emptive stocking of bottled water with purchase limits, as the phenomenon of empty shelves at major chains such as Tesco emerges, the Daily Mail reports .
A branch of the Aldi chain in London put up posters limiting customers to three to five bottles of drinking water per customer amid panic. Later, however, he withdrew them.
The Environment Agency has decided to declare a drought in 8 of its 14 regions:
Devon and Cornwall
Solent and South Dons
Kent and South London
Harts and North London
East Anglia
Thames
Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire, and
East Midlands.
